This is a short but fascinating autobiography of a Japanese woman, living in the first half of this century, who progressed from teenage rebellion to Shinto asceticism and finally to spiritual enlightenment in Zen Buddhism. In the second half of the book, the translator offers a commentary on Japanese religion at the time of Satomi's pilgrimage. This commentary is excellent if only as a succinct description of religious ideas, both official and unofficial, since the Meiji Restoration.
