I think that I had more tears than the author after reading the book. I lived in this neighborhood from 1935-1971 and remember how it used to be. When I walked those streets and shopped at those stores everything was good. By the time that Dean and his family moved in, everything was changing. My son went to the same school that he did and I can't believe all the drugs and weapons the young gangs had. He had a hard childhood growing up in that neighborhood, but because of his parents and friends

The story, actually the true stories, are amazing, his writing style not so much. Anyway, it will keep you busy and interested till the end.
Can not believe that was really happening in Detroit (or anywhere in USA ) in 80s.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I work with Dean, although I don't really know him well, so it was interesting to read his perspective of growing up in Detroit in the midst of gang wars and drugs and drive-bys. It was well written, and kept my attention. Found a couple typos, but that's the editors fault. :) It was a good autobiography in my opinion, because normally I don't enjoy biographies, so the fact that I remained interested and captivated says a lot. Good job Dean!!
A very well written and honest book. As my husband is Macedonian, from Detroit, and we lived there briefly in the 80's, I could really appreciate the author's experiences, descriptions and honesty. It should be an awesome and heartfelt movie!
