Record of a strange and wonderful childhood.

Although it's an autobiography Freya Stark's early life is so extraordinary it reads like a novel. So it includes a bit of everything family relationships, travel, growing up, nursing in WW1 and a love of mountaineering. I have read some of her travel books but didn't know that she climbed the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa in the 1920s - the latter from Macugnaga so I have walked just the first mile or so of her route.
