Record of a strange and wonderful childhood.
Although it's an autobiography Freya Stark's early life is so extraordinary it reads like a novel. So it includes a bit of everything family relationships, travel, growing up, nursing in WW1 and a love of mountaineering. I have read some of her travel books but didn't know that she climbed the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa in the 1920s - the latter from Macugnaga so I have walked just the first mile or so of her route. Enjoyed this book very much.A glimpse of an unconventional life in the first half of the last century, years that prepared Freya Stark for her later amazing journeys.

Freya Stark
was born in Paris, where her parents were studying art. Her mother, Flora, was an Italian of Polish/German descent; her father, Robert, an English painter from Devon.
