, and now his hot seat hosting Fox Sports' hit show "The Best Damn Sports Show Period." But the face he puts forth on camera is a mere part of the true Tom Arnold - also known for deciding one night in his early 20s to streak through his small Iowa town. Young Tom didn't think it was such a blast by the end of the evening, though, when he ended up naked in the drunk tank, forced to call in "sick" to his job at Hormel, where his duties included pulling fat off hog ribs and shooting in the head pigs that couldn't make it up the electrocution conveyor. When his boss found out why he had really missed work, Tom got fired, leading his grandmother to remark, "that's a shame. That was the best job you'll ever have."
Fortunately, grandmom was wrong and Tom went on to better jobs, among them roles in the movies
Hero, Nine Months
and
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
. He has had his own 3-part HBO special, "Tom Arnold: The Naked Truth," was a writer, actor and executive producer of the acclaimed show "Roseanne," and starred in 3 television shows of his own, "The Jackie Thomas Show," "Tom," and "The Tom Show."
From his midwest upbringing to his early days in comedy clubs to his successes and failures in love and Hollywood, Tom is by turns endearingly self-deprecating and brutally honest about his past. I never really thought about Tom Arnold... I knew he was a writer and an actor and married to Roseanne Barr, but I never really cared about any of the gossipy stuff. But I heard him on the Adam Carolla podcast recently and he was super funny and has lots of crazy stories and I really enjoyed it, so when I saw this book I picked it up to get filled in on the rest.

Tom's lived a pretty crazy life, but he still comes across as someone you'd want to know. He's a thoughtful, generous person who is incredibly messed up but honest about his shortcomings. The saddest part of his whole book is that you can still tell how vulnerable he is... and how many people take advantage of him. That bummed me out a bit, but several parts of this book are laugh-out-loud funny. Especially the part about when he decides to rescue a celebrity from living on the streets and get him sober... I won't ruin it for you, but it was a hoot.
Interesting book from someone with an interesting life. I like him a lot now and I hope he's wised up and stop being so vulnerable to the vultures (although I just looked up his wikipedia entry and he's now engaged to ANOTHER woman, which means that he's probably not as invulnerable as I'd hoped).

So, I just took this class where the teacher highly recommended this book. I, being a good Iowa transplant (i.e. not a native) decided to heed his advice and learn perhaps something about this state's native son. Wow. That was a mistake. I would not recommend this book to my worst enemy. However, I must admit that the book must have been somewhat like a train wreck for me because I felt compelled to finish it--I could not look away.
This book is hilarious. He has always struggles with his weight, hence the title. He was on Roseanne, is a writer, ahd been in major movies. He is super funny and I really liked this book about his crazy life.
I didn't even know this book existed until I walked past it in the library. Since I recently read Roseanne's books, I was now strangely interested in reading Tom's side of the story. Don't judge me.
This book was surprisingly entertaining. I never thought much about Tom Arnold, but maybe there is more to him than meets the eye. He didn't even really bash Roseanne, even after everything she has said about him. All in all, this was a fun, quick read.
I would like to know if he ever ended up marrying

I would like to know if he ever ended up marrying Shelby, since this was written in 2002. She seemed really good for him.

Really I'm more shocked than anything that nobody has read or reviewed this version of the book! Hell, I got mine autoghaphed by the man! Arnold is another guy who doesn't get a lot of love from people. The standard response is that he rode Roseanne's fame to his own. This book really shows how that is not the case. He's very witty in his writting and the title is genius (which he explains in the book). Probably worth your time, so don't be a jerk!
An incredibly candid and funny celebrity biography. What could be better?
Only one problem: it was written by Tom Arnold.
He ducks a lot of the Roseanne stuff and stuff about his mom (who was married 7 times). He, however, dwells on his being molested quite a bit and his post-Roseanne career and romances (both areas are cringe-worthy).
Surprisingly good AND not a diet book! He's a funny guy and this book was an easy read all about his terrible childhood, raging cocaine habit, bout with alcoholism, many disastrous marriages and all the unlikely amount of good fortune along the way.
