The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. More than 60 of his full-color collage pictures are handsomely reproduced and serve as a statement of Carle's impressive talent.

This was a very interesting read and the illustrations showing Eric's style development over time were great. I appreciated the demonstration at the end of his typical art method. I confess I had not actually realised until now that one or two of the stories I attributed to him (including
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
The next few of our library story times for pre-school age children will highlight the "transformation", "color", and "artistic expression" aspects of the story. (We are, after all, talking about Dr.Sue McCleaf Nespeca's theory...
"A new approach to storytime incorporates recent theories on developmental learning and how children’s brains work.
According to this research, the best way to make new connections in the brain is by building on something already known.
A child who loves a book will listen to it repeatedly, maintaining interest.
Using a selected book in a number of consecutive preschool storytimes by presenting it differently each time can help children learn new skill sets.
Employing repetition with variety expands the story experience, helping children to connect an engage with the story on a higher level through activities specifically designed to address multiple intelligences.
The child’s experience with that book then becomes much richer."
Today we turned to the fold out spread showing the artist at work and then went right into sharing the oversize board book edition of his "Very Hungry Caterpillar".

Of course they are trying to tell their life story, but if a child is trying to learn about it they will not be able to hold focus with such a book. This biography is perfect because it includes over 60 color illustrations. These pictures tell the story of Eric’s education growing up, his previous jobs he has had, and the technique for illustrating that he uses in his own books. I would definitely use this book in a classroom. It would be a very helpful tool to use with kids when I am trying to teach them about an author. They can use it for an author study and because it is a good length, it can be read to the class during the given class period.

Eric Carle is one of my students' favorites. Interestingly my students on the Spectrum all are completely enamored with his books. They love the repetition and rhythm and I have purchased every one of his books for my classroom, so all of my students are familiar. Therefore, when I saw this book, I had to have it! Not only is it spectacularly illustrated in the collage of words and pictures we expect from his work, but Carle also provides autibiographical information that is fascinating! I had no idea he grew up in wartime Germany, after being born in the U.S. The kids loved seeing how his artwork is created and we all enjoyed the stories of Carle's life that made him who he is.

Also worth checking out are a transcribed speech about where he draws his inspiration, and a photoessay about his creative process.

Both parents immigrated from Germany and were wed in Syracuse NY. Eric was born there 13 months later. His family returned to Germany in 1934, when he was about 5 yrs old and he was unable to return to the USA bc of the war. He went to art school at 16 and worked as a graphic artist for 2 yrs before returning to the USA in 1952.
We did two days of Eric Carle with our Mommy and Me playschool. I read this in preperation. I found it very interesting hearing about Carle's life, especially how he came to be a children's illustrator and how his life effected his work. My favorite part was the fold out of how he paints his tissue papers.
I adore Eric Carle and I just reserved this book honestly to look at the pics but I made myself read it and I loved it, absoluetely wonderful biography told from his own words, touched me deeply and now makes me look at his artwork and books with new appreciation and enjoyment.
The pictures were the best part. There was a lot more biography to it then expected but was nice. It was almost like his story was written for children because he kept referring to things he'd already said and using simple sentences, BUT still liked it. He's one of my favorites.
After the trip to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art at the end of April with a co-worker and 18 other Rhode Island librarians, I wanted to read more about him so I got this one from the library. This is a great book. It's so insightful into Carle's life.
part biography with a personal memoir at the end, plus a section in the middle about how to do his technique. lots of pictures. I didn't read every word cover to cover but I was inspired. I made a project after reading the book and it came out really nicely.
What's not to like here. A retrospective of Carle's work to include samples of childhood drawings, an autobiography and essay explorations of a treasure of children's literature's work. Bright, bold. This one begs to be picked up and to be looked through. . .
What can I say--I love Carle's work. In addition to being well-peppered with his fabulous artwork in full-color, this book talks a bit about his history and how he came to be the phenomenal collage-illustrator that he is today.
I feel a bit guilty marking this as read since I only skimmed it. I looked at every page, lovely book. Includes quite a bit of autobiographical writing. Seemed interesting - didn't make time to thoroughly read it all though.
If you like Eric Carle books this is a great resource. I would use it for an author study of Eric Carle or to just add more to the class discussion on the unique and beautiful art that Carle uses in his books.
A wonderful book about Carle. I loved the short autobiography, as well as the explanation of how he makes his art. I feel as though I could go home and paint some tissue paper and make myself a hungry caterpillar. :)
Learning about an author/illustrator I have loved since childhood was fascinating. It was amazing to learn about his life in America and Germany and how that shaped him and helped him create the books he has.
An excellent resource to learn everything you would ever want to know about Eric Carle. My kinders really enjoyed to photos of Carle's collage-making process.
