Carle is one of the most beloved illustrators of children's books. This retrospective is more than just an appreciation of his art, however. The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. This was a very interesting read and the illustrations showing Eric's style development over time were great. I appreciated the demonstration at the end of his typical art method. Eric has had a fascinating life and it was a lot of fun to see the man and the stories behind the much-loved children's writer and illustrator. I confess I had not actually realised until now that one or two of the stories I attributed to him (including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? ) were actually written by ...more

Speaking of Eric Carle, how handy that our library has this book! Here's what we are doing in our story times for six weeks:

This is our third story time in this six-week series where we are building the theme on various aspects of the Carle classic "hungry caterpillar".

Somewhere in each of these story times we will share this story.

The Art of Eric Carle is a very well written book. It is the perfect way to tell the story of his life. When a reader opens this book, they will find a little peek at what exactly it is that makes Eric so successful. Most autobiographies tend to be boring in the sense that they are way too many words. Of course they are trying to tell their life story, but if a child is trying to learn about it they will not be able to hold focus with such a book. This biography is perfect because it includes ov ...more

Biography

Eric Carle is one of my students' favorites. Interestingly my students on the Spectrum all are completely enamored with his books. They love the repetition and rhythm and I have purchased every one of his books for my classroom, so all of my students are familiar. Therefore, when I saw this book, I had to have it! Not only is it spectacularly illustrated in the collage of words and pictures we expect from his work, but Carle also provides autibiographical information that

A delightfully brief introdution to the life and process of one of the coolest children's book author/illustrators ever. There are a few gems in this collection. One is a short autobiography that Carle uses to share the early experiences that inspire his work; the trauma of corperal punishment in primary school and the sadness of growing up in Germany during WW2, as well as the idyllic country summers with relatives, fateful encounters, and memeories of a father who impressed a love and apprecia ...more

This is an informational text based on the life works of author Eric Carle. The text encloses artwork from his student days and autobiographical information. There are excellent anecdotal reflections by friend and editor, Ann Beneduce. The book entails graphic details about the authors collage work and encloses a bibliography of all of his books. The book highlights on Eric Carle's speech at the Children's Literature Center in the Library of Congress. This is an excellent teacher refence text, b ...more

A great book on Eric Carle's art, with a biography of Carle. A fun book for kids to look at and experience some of his great drawings.

Almost 4 stars really but very brief. And i didn't come away inspired. I did like the speech he gave.

This book is a great mixture of autobiography and biography. This book shows how Eric Carle creates his collages in photographic essay and has over sixty full colored college pictures to look through.

The Art of Eric Carle is a great book that has beautiful illustrations from his past works and personal writings from Eric Carle and his colleges.

This book would be great to inspire my students to create their own picture collage of anything they want (house, imaginary animal, people, etc.) and th

Love Eric Carle's books and art!!

Both parents immigrated from Germany and were wed in Syracuse NY. Eric was born there 13 months later. His family returned to Germany in 1934, when he was about 5 yrs old and he was unable to return to the USA bc of the war. He went to art school at 16 and worked as a graphic artist for 2 yrs before returning to the USA in 1952.

We did two days of Eric Carle with our Mommy and Me playschool. I read this in preperation. I found it very interesting hearing about Carle's life, especially how he came to be a children's illustrator and how his life effected his work. My favorite part was the fold out of how he paints his tissue papers.

I adore Eric Carle and I just reserved this book honestly to look at the pics but I made myself read it and I loved it, absoluetely wonderful biography told from his own words, touched me deeply and now makes me look at his artwork and books with new appreciation and enjoyment.

The pictures were the best part. There was a lot more biography to it then expected but was nice. It was almost like his story was written for children because he kept referring to things he'd already said and using simple sentences, BUT still liked it. He's one of my favorites.

After the trip to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art at the end of April with a co-worker and 18 other Rhode Island librarians, I wanted to read more about him so I got this one from the library. This is a great book. It's so insightful into Carle's life.
Naomi
part biography with a personal memoir at the end, plus a section in the middle about how to do his technique. lots of pictures. I didn't read every word cover to cover but I was inspired. I made a project after reading the book and it came out really nicely.

What's not to like here. A retrospective of Carle's work to include samples of childhood drawings, an autobiography and essay explorations of a treasure of children's literature's work. Bright, bold. This one begs to be picked up and to be looked through. . .
Joanna
What can I say--I love Carle's work. In addition to being well-peppered with his fabulous artwork in full-color, this book talks a bit about his history and how he came to be the phenomenal collage-illustrator that he is today.

I feel a bit guilty marking this as read since I only skimmed it. I looked at every page, lovely book. Includes quite a bit of autobiographical writing. Seemed interesting - didn't make time to thoroughly read it all though.
Laura
If you like Eric Carle books this is a great resource. I would use it for an author study of Eric Carle or to just add more to the class discussion on the unique and beautiful art that Carle uses in his books.
Michelle
A wonderful book about Carle. I loved the short autobiography, as well as the explanation of how he makes his art. I feel as though I could go home and paint some tissue paper and make myself a hungry caterpillar. :)
Kristen
Learning about an author/illustrator I have loved since childhood was fascinating. It was amazing to learn about his life in America and Germany and how that shaped him and helped him create the books he has.
Leslie
An excellent resource to learn everything you would ever want to know about Eric Carle. My kinders really enjoyed to photos of Carle's collage-making process.
Alexandria Steele
This is a book for children, but one of the most inspiring books I've read this year. I love Eric Carle's art, and his love for teaching children.
Caitlin Sabers
I LOVE Eric Carle and I love this book! This shows Carle's collage art work, studio, and has a biography. It's a great collection of Carle's artwork.
Maria
Lots of really cool Eric Carle art. First half is lots of text and pix of Eric Carle and his life. Second half is his artwork.
Marsha
A wonderful book with biographical information and illustrations of both Eric Carle's art and the process by which he creates it.
Theresa

Very creative man and his work is world renowned. I love his work! Great information but more of a reference tool.
Katy Brandes
Being a fan of Carle's artwork made this an interesting quick look into his background and work style.
Anna
I enjoyed hearing his story and learning about his artistic methods through his direct diction.
