The Book Abounds In Practical Suggestions About The Care, The Food, The Comfort, And And Needs Of The Animal World, Blended So Pleasantly With The Story That Both Young People And Adults Will Find It Charming And Helpful.
I have an original copy of this book, and grew up with it. "Pussy Meow" was written after the publication of "Black Beauty" and "Beautiful Joe", but deals with the same general subject matter--kindness towards animals. It too is written in first person, from the point of view of the animal, and while is very much in the tone of its time (first published in 1901), it is a touching story of the life of a cat.

Like "Black Beauty", the book doesn't shy away from the common cruelties of the time, and parts are quite sad, but the overall story is one of hope. The protagonist, Meow, relates her life from kittenhood to mature age, gaining and losing friends and owners along the way. She mentions the careless and sometimes dreadful treatment of animals as well as how to properly care for a pet (though some of the ideas are very out of date by now!) and even touches on merciful euthanasia.
Meow also tells stories of other animals, most of whom are now completely obscure but who must have once been known as well as Beautiful Joe himself!
It's a delightful story--not long, but sweet and sentimental. I am always glad to renew my acquaintance with Meow.

This book was originally published in 1903.
