Printer, author, philanthropist, abolitionist, scientist, librarian, diplomat, inventor, philosopher, self-aggrandizer, and social wag, Benjamin Franklin is one of the most fascinating characters in all of American history-a quality that was not lost on the man himself, as his autobiography makes plain. Avoiding the strife of the American Revolution entirely, Franklin focuses his incisive wit on the culture and society of colonial Philadelphia, weaving a mostly true mythology of humble origins and hard work that created the concepts of "The American Dream" and "the self-made man." This edition includes letters written by Franklin as well as "Poor Richard's Almanac," a popular pamphlet that was continuously reprinted from 1732-1758. Franklin's Autobiography, originally published in French in 1791, and translated into English and published in London in 1793, is considered the great autobiography of life in colonial America. American icon BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790), born in Massachusetts to a British immigrant father and colonial mother, published the famous "Poor Richard's Almanac," helped found the University of Pennsylvania, and was the first Postmaster General of the United States. Franklin's likeness adorns, among other things, the United States hundred-dollar bill.

I found a 1936 copy at a library sale and I've alway's wanted to read it. So much of history is being rewritten and who can defend themselves after they are dead? Enjoyed him as the speaker throughout and marveled at his candid explanations of how things came about. Imagine no one to loan you a book? It's hard to imagine educating my children without a library in the house, friends bookshelves and the local library. He openly states he started a secret group of writers so as to better sharpen on

It's hard to imagine educating my children without a library in the house, friends bookshelves and the local library. He openly states he started a secret group of writers so as to better sharpen ones mind and have a good argument of ideas that were meant to be constructive. Also enjoyed his desire to become a better person by small improvements as he passed around his Poor Richard Almanac. It bettered his community and lined his pocket. He had and ego too, but used restraint. He had a way of giving his ideas to others too and then they would recommend him to be the leader. Ha. Funny.

I think the Poor Richard's Almanac and it's hilarious maxims are my favorite things that Benjamin Franklin has contributed this world. (Yes, more important to me than the kite, library, bifocals, electricity, daylight saving time , etc). But I think that his autobiography is a close second mainly because I think the log he kept to track his ability to maintain moral perfection is an extremely interesting and challenging idea. But I think that his autobiography is a close second mainly because I think the log he kept to track his ability to maintain moral perfection is an extremely interesting and challenging idea. Either way, he was an intelligent, innovative, and creative historical figure who has accomplished way too many inspiring things for just one book. Benjamin Franklin famously said to "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." and well what do you know, it looks like this time he's done both.

Benjamin Franklin is such an intriguing character to me, his stories well worth the read, witty, smart, funny--he was really driven. I found his relationship with his son interesting and his
story of riding over the DE in a sinking boat had me cracking up (was it just for laughs, maybe, but his storytelling that entertaining), I gathered hints of his deeper personality but not as in depth as I intended. Maybe its better that way because Franklin seemed to be a natural born, disciplined optimist,
