A great read for me. I liked reading about the time Davis spent on his grandparents farm in Corinth. 15 cows milked by hand, hogs, sheep, chickens and Morgan horses. With the animals and his grandmother's garden they grew most of their food. The house had no bathroom or telephone, it did have wood burning stoves with a hole in the ceiling to heat the upstairs. Both of his grandparents had been teachers in one room schools. I enjoyed reading about his childhood growing up in Barre with his parent
I enjoyed reading about his childhood growing up in Barre with his parents. He was 10 years older than my mother that also grew up in Barre. While Deane's father was a principal of Island Pond High School he was admitted to the Vermont Bar. He practiced law in Barre where the family did have indoor plumbing. Davis had 7 brothers and sisters and he went to Spaulding High School and Boston University Law School. He and his college roomate had a shoeshine business in Boston to earn money. Davis talks about the Scots and Italians coming to Barre to work with granite and the grim toll silicosis took. He climbed Mt Katahdin in Maine. Davis saw Teddy Roosevelt in Barre during Roosevelt's presidential campaign. Davis practiced law in Barre, then became a judge, then counsel for National Life of Vermont Insurance Company, then president of National Life and then governor of Vermont. I can remember quite a lot of the issues during his governorship, since it was during my last 2 years of high school and 1st 2 years of College. It was well written and humorous and I would recommend it for anyone interested in Vermont during this century.
