From their young days playing house to becoming heads of their own households while still in their teenage years, Jack and Christine's lives are linked, and Christine quickly becomes the love of his life. There is no doubt of his love for Christine, and he bluntly exposes his feelings for her to his readers, taking them by the hand into the heart and soul of the unrequited lover beginning at the age of six. Much more than simply a story of adolescence, Gunthridge writes in a voice reminiscent of J.D. Salinger. His accounts cross the generation line. If you have ever loved, you will be touched by this work. He crosses the act of love with the past, present and future bringing forth unexpected emotional involvement with his words, ideas and philosophies. He reminds readers why we love in the first place, why we consider the meaning of life, and later, why we examine the meaning of our own existence. For such powerfully touching words to come from such a young voice is extraordinary. This is not a simple memoir from a high school student, the mere fulfillment of an assignment, another reflection of teenage alienation and loss of innocence. This is a declaration of love for all time, not only for another, but in the end, for one's self. The ultimate love comes from the self and is expressed only when one is ready for more than passion. This work can easily be read alone or on a Saturday afternoon with the one you love. It can be shared between and across the generations. Gunthridge has given us one of those novels that you pass on to those you care for in your life. His work is an opportunity to experience now what will later be considered a classic. I’m feeling a little ill at ease after having read this and am torn between a bad rating with a review full of high-arching boomers (a euphemistic phrase used by my parents to describe gratuitous use of the F-word) and a bad rating with a review that attempts to logically explain what bothered me about this book.

The premise is fairly simple to understand. During his senior year of high school, Jack was required to write an autobiography for a school assignment. This book is the result of that assignment. The book is marketed as a love story between two childhood pals, Jack and Christine and how that relationship has defined Jack’s life from the very beginning. The two take turns narrating the story from their respective points of view. The author distinguishes these voices by using different fonts, which mostly works, but doesn’t quite mask the fact that their voices sound like they were written by the same person.
The characters address family and life situations that include
all
of the following: infidelity, divorce, alcohol and drug abuse, the death of a parent, abusive relationships and the meaning of religion and life as it relates to sex. If you think this might be too much to tackle in one novel that’s only 114 pages long, you and I would be in agreement.
The author self-published this book as an autobiography more than 10 years after it would have been written. Not knowing the author personally, I question that decision. Although I suspect that friends or people who’ve been previously exposed to his humor and/or know his personality might appreciate this book more than someone like me who was basically blind-sided with a big, steaming pile of WTF?
At the beginning of the story he admitted that he’s probably not the best candidate to write his own autobiography because he has a tendency to lie so I was expecting a healthy heaping of editor’s embellishment. Before long, I began to suspect that very little of what appears in this story is actually autobiographical and that most of it is pure male fantasy. For example, at one point Christine writes in response to a smartass comment Jack makes about STD’s, “If he is so worried about my vaginal health, I believe he has a cream to cure all of my problems. I will even squeeze the tube for him.”
My gross-out meter is pretty high but I’m sorry, that is beyond disgusting. And who SAYS something like that?!? Is it supposed to be funny? Is it supposed to be serious? And I’m not asking rhetorically, because I really have no clue.

Why doesn't Goodreads give you an option for a negative rating? If I could, this one would definitely get one. And I'm a generous rater! This book was so awful it actually made me feel a little ill. Life is a very short little book--the sort that a quick reader could finish in about an hour. It took me TWO WEEKS to read this book because it disgusted me so much that I'd have to put it down and come back to it later. Not only is it very poorly written, but the story is just bland and unbelievable

I will say that the concept is kinda cool...I really like the excerpts written by others that are scattered throughout the book. But it is a bit suspicious...these other authors just happen to have the same 'voice' as Mr. Gunthridge. And the girlfriend? Who says that stuff?? Figments of a very hard-up mans imagination, I think. Oh, and the arrogance of this book...ugh. This was one book I was very glad to be done with!
The intro says that this book is an adaptation of a screenplay -- and that sums it up pretty well. This book was easily read in a few hours. I would have liked to see more character development, richness of storyline, well just more.
I'd like to score it -2 stars.
Did you notice that nearly 30% of the 5star ratings are from the author himself?
Reading this book is like a 5 hour conversation with THE COUPLE. Do you know 'the couple?' They were those people you knew in school who'd been together since they were born, you never see them apart, their names are permanently fused together. Say it with me: "JacknChristine." They have no individuality and you don't know them as anything else except THE COUPLE. Sounds interesting, right? Wrong. This book is so self-absorbed that it becomes extremely boring after the first chapter. Jack and Christine even write in the same voice. They talk in clipped declarative sentences and say "You see,..." a lot.
I'm a pretty emotional person overall, but even I feel ill after reading this book. With all the touchy-feely crap going on, I'd have difficulty believing it was written by a guy, were it not for the characterization of Christine. No girl that I've ever met in my entire life behaves/thinks like that. I was ABUSED as a child. My parents are AWFUL. I have FATHER ISSUES. All I have is JACK. JACK JACK JACK. But I'm still a filthy SLUT and try to sleep with everything that walks. But it's only to make JACK jealous. JACK JACK JACK. YOU SEE, I was ABUSED. It's only my nature. Yet I will sacrifice our RELATIONSHIP so JACK can be happy. JACK JACK JACK. Repeat ad nauseum. *headdesk headdesk headdesk*
"Much more than simply a story of adolescence, Gunthridge writes in a voice reminiscent of J.D. Salinger...His work is an opportunity to experience now what will later be considered a classic." --says the blurb up there. Um, what??? Did we read the same book? This book doesn't even deserve to be in the same Kindle device with Salinger. Heaven help the freshmen comp class that has to read this book, if it's such a 'classic.' Yuck.

I don't know where to begin a review of this book - it was just so unenjoyable. I guess the best part was that it is so slight- that the pain was over quickly. If I could give it a zero I would.
First off - this is not an autobiography; the author clearly states that in many places and in the test. Then why approach it that way? I got the feeling the author was a bit full of himself - as shown in the structure, as well as the writing.

THe characters are totally unbelievable - not high schoolers and not adults. She acts more like a young man's fantasy creation that a real person.
Next is the premise of how the story was written - one person writing and then the other commenting. Well this hold up for a while, until there are passages that clearly don't fit this structure - and while it might be cute, it makes the whole thing fall down.
This book was "free" on my kindle, and since I'm going into education, I thought it would be interesting to read something from the perspective of a teenager. Some of it was interesting, but it seemed to repeat the same things over and over. Nothing terribly dramatic happened, there was no climax. The girlfriend was especially annoying, and I wanted to slap her! It sincerely hope that all teengae girls aren't this manipulative and sex-crazed. This is one where I would have liked to give a negative number in the rating. As to review, I'll say it never got me. Probably more fantasy than anything else. Did you notice that the author himself gave two 5 star ratings? So without those, this book is rated below a 3, consider that.
I found this book to be slightly entertaining though I did find it hard to read at times. The story had problems moving forward because it would constintly go back to the same ideas. At times I felt as if I read the same passage in 6 different spots. Though this may have been the purpose of the book the new point of views did not give any information that the first view gave.

The overall plot of the book was so centered around sex that it was hard to connect with anyone in the story. As soon as I felt as if I was understanding the character sex would be thrown into the story and I tended to lose interest fairly quickly. I know what the author was attempting in this book but I don't think he quite nailed it.
The book did hold my interest though when sex was not the theme (which was rare to find moments) but at times it felt as if I could feel how the characters may have felt.
In a nutshell I enjoyed the book but I expected it to be much better. The idea for the book was amazing but he could have done alot more with what he was given.

I found this book, while short (what can you expect from something that is suppose to be a high schooler’s assignment), quite enjoyable. This book aptly depicts adolescent relationships with all the drama and how everything seems much more life and death. Teenagers often think that the relationship that they are in is going to last a life time, while the rest of adults look on, knowing that the possibility of finding “the one” in high school is slim to none. I enjoyed the slap-stick humor of Christina, especially because I have found that girls are much more likely and willing to discuss sexual relations than guys. I enjoyed the different perspectives, especially with Jack and Christina trying to type at the same time. There are certain parts that rubbed me the wrong way: like relationship with Christina meaning no friendship with the other girl; and the relationship itself seemed very unhealthy, what with the using of other people to “get back at eachother.” But an enjoyable read.
The one part that has me miffed about this book is the whole all-the-characters-depicted-in-this-story-are-fictional blurb at the beginning of the book, combined with the Forward and Afterward of the authors that makes it seem like it actually is autobiographical. Seems contradictory to me.

This book is pure crap. Talk about overanalyzing a relationship to death. Jesus, that's all this book was, Jack and Christine overanalyzing their relationship together and each other. They kept going over different parts over and over again, as if they hadn't been covered in the last chapter.

Christine's character really bothers me. She has basically been a tease to Jack his entire life. She has purposefully hurt him, but she justifies it as her way of doing it to make him stronger. She has repeatedly kicked him while he was down and he just continues to take it. And then she finally gives him a chance and they are a couple, but she still keeps saying that they will never last and that it's only a matter of time before they break up even though Jack believes otherwise. What a horrible person. And on top of it all, I think Christine is a nymphomaniac because all she talks is about how Jack won't have sex with her.
The middle part that Christine supposedly wrote was the worst thing that I have ever read in my entire life. It was all over the place and she jumped around from topic to topic and then back to the first topic. Like she kept talking about the abusive relationship she was in over and over and over again but she would get distracted and instead of just talking about it once in a long section to get it over with, she would just jump around and then come back to it. It was also annoying at how self centered she was. I don't even know how many times she said that she was by far the most popular girl in school and how hot she was and how Jack would never love anyone other than her but she didn't understand why. (Um maybe because you're hot and the most popular girl in school, duh?) It was just a stream of consiousness, complete drivel and I was getting so irritated reading it. I guess I should be grateful that at least there were paragraphs.
I finally couldn't take it anymore and basically skipped to the end and read the afterword. I immediately deleted it from my kindle. It's a miracle the my kindle didn't end up on the other side of the room because I really had to restrain myself from throwing it there. And I love my kindle. Don't waste your time or you $0.99 on this book.

It really never did though, but it kept me interested enough that I continuted reading in hopes of something amazing. It is not a book I would read again for sure, but something kept me interested. It is about a boy writing about his relationship with a girl. I think mainly I kept reading because I wanted to know if they ended up together as adults. I think I was a little disappointed because I never really knew for sure. It felt like it lacked closure to me. I understand why you never really know because the author explains it in the book, but it still just left me feeling left hanging. I wouldn't really recommend the book with such other great books out there to delve into. Not to mention I was shocked by the things the girl said in the book, and I did not even realize this book was for younger readers until reading some of the other reviews. definitely inappropriate for young readers in my opinion.

Anybody who has ever been in love.
There is a part of me as an author that hates saying what my books are about. Life is about so many things. It's about trying to figure out relationships. These stupid things go against everything that being in love is about, but we do it because we are crazy in love. There is that element to this book.
There is also a part of this book that is about trying to escape your parents' past and creating your own future. The problem is that you recognize part of your parents inside of you. How do you have your own life while still maintaining a relationship with your parents? Can you escape genetics.
While this is a love story, it is also a comedy. There is humor in being in love. I have tried to capture that with this book.
This book looks at a relationship from both the male and female perspective. One of my friends commented that her boyfriend was trying to read it over her shoulder. She then told me that he doesn't read. I take that as a compliment.
I'm not sure how to rate this book. It is so very different from anything I have read before. It is supposedly written by an eighteen year old for a school assignment to write his autobiography. I can see how this could be that but I also see it as a cleverly disguised way for a young adult to springboard a career to just be famous in the day of utube and reality shows.

Jack is self-obsessed Jewish boy like most normal teens or is that his excuse? He supposedly has won high school awards for his writing and wants to be a comedian for his career. He writes a great deal about his love of a girl named Christine. She also writes a great deal in the book. Jack's best guy friend also writes a chapter. I don't think I would want a young adult to read this but I found the chapter on why his pet name for Christine is "Israel" especially interesting and thought provoking.
Language: Yes, in that it is so implied you might just write it out.
Sex: Yes but they don't go all the way but every "visual" of foreplay is written.
Violence: no
Alcohol/Drugs: no

Written in a voice so honest and rich that to truly appreciate what is being offered one must experience it, Jack Gunthridge’s Life: An Autobiography As Told By Jack Gunthridge is a modern literary masterpiece. Presented in narrative form, this work reads like having a conversation over coffee with a close friend. Gunthridge invites his reader’s into a time of life when transitions rage as quickly and ferociously as adolescent hormones.
Jack and Christine are linked from birth. In fact, Christine claims she owes her existence to Jack. If it were not for his parents conceiving a child, her competitive father would not have followed suit. Unfortunately for Christine, she is not born a boy, and an early rejection from her father begins an intensely intriguing journey with the opposite sex that contributes to the pain and joy of Jack’s heart.
Interestingly enough, Jack also experiences rejection from his own father, but the rejection is involuntary and arrives in the news that his father is killed by a drunk driver. Gunthridge recalls, “The facts are this. I was about to lose my virginity, when I lost my father instead . . . My father was actually killed by the impact of Lee’s car hitting his. His car then burst into flames. The tragedy of this is that the one thing that my father did not want in life was to be cremated.” (p 23).
From their young days playing house to becoming heads of their own households while still in their teenage years, Jack and Christine’s lives are linked, and Christine quickly becomes the love of his life. There is no doubt of his love for Christine, and he bluntly exposes his feelings for her to his readers, taking them by the hand into the heart and soul of the unrequited lover beginning at the age of six.
Unlike so many works where one reads only one version from one voice, even when recounting the voices of others, Gunthridge invites the important players in this journey to add their particular views of his recollections. With equal honesty, we get to know Jack not only from his heart and from the desire of his heart, but also from his best friend Arthur and from Melinda, who loves him as much as he loves Christine and loves him enough to let him be with his happiness.
This is a declaration of love for all time, not only for another, but in the end, for one’s self. The ultimate love comes from the self and is expressed only when one is ready for more than passion. It is, as Gunthridge writes, “not a question of love or desire. I am looking at the commitment and how to keep it” (p 92).
This work can easily be read alone or on a Saturday afternoon with the one you love. It can be shared between and across the generations. This is a thinking and feeling work, not casual entertainment between a front and back cover. If you're looking for made for TV level entertainment, you will be disappointed.

The voices are strong and unique throughout. There's no real plot structure to the memoir, but the anecdotes Jack tells and the intensity of the love he feels for Christine propel the reader forward. It's a quick read. While the ending is perhaps not completely satisfying, this book is a quick read, a unique take on the memoir, and thought-provoking. I recommend it--especially if you prefer voice/prose over plot.
Going into this book, I was expecting a romance. Instead, I got a dysfunctional relationship. Jacks love for Christine is admirable, but the question I found constantly on the tip of my tongue was why? Is he in love with her because they've been together (and I'm not talking relationship wise) so long? I don't doubt he truly believes he is in love with her, but I don't think he actually is, especially as towards the end of the book he is almost questioning their compatability. Surely if he loved

I don't doubt he truly believes he is in love with her, but I don't think he actually is, especially as towards the end of the book he is almost questioning their compatability. Surely if he loved her he would give up everything for her (as his father did). I also don't see any redeeming qualities in Christine. She is unbelievably spiteful throughout the book, and undeserving of Jack. I know this book was autobiographical, but it seemed as though the author made no attempt to make the characters even slightly endearing. Therefore, I found this book quite unenjoyable and deserving of only one star.

Life: An Autobiagraphy as Told by Jack Gunthridge is a touching, thought provoking, almost tragic story. Very sweet. I read it with a friend out loud. It made us laugh, made us cry, it made us discuss and argue. It was a very enjoyable read. It was so good! And from an author's point of view, I felt that it was such a great piece of work, that I called friends and fellow writers and DEMANDED that they drop what they were doing and read the book IMMEDIATELY. And they all agreed.
I believe that Life is being marketed to the late teen / young adult crowd. I am a grown up and I loved it!

The way this was written was interesting... as an autobiographical high school assignment. I liked the way the different characters took turns writing, which often made for some comedy. The relationship between Christine and Jack started out sweet, but was pretty unhealthy. It definitely had the feeling of high schoolers in love- completely gaga, playing games, jealousy, lust. These two characters had tragic young lives, but despite their messed up relationship, got each other through their most

This is a short book which I found both lacking and somewhat honest. The feelings were honest, but the over analysis of the relationship isn't, in my experience as a middle school and high school educator typical of teenagers. Also, Jack's love is more than a little stalkerish, and more than a little unhealthy. However, that level of obsession can also be realistic of teens. So, I can't say that I liked the book, but I didn't dislike it either.
I am glad I did. It was a good book and I either know others who have gone through about everything in the book or are going through it. I also was able to identify with a bit of it myself.
Really interesting premise and character pov! Written as a school project...tell the story of your life from 0-18. Jack captures his story, his girlfriend and others who pipe in their viewpoint. 5 stars for originality!!!!!
Technically I am an internationally award winning filmmaker. I became an author when I turned one of my screenplays into a novel. I don't really make a distinction between my film work and my written works. It's the 21st century. Everything is a text and a way of telling a story. It doesn't matter to me if the words I write are never seen by an audience the way they are in my films, or if they are

I don't really make a distinction between my film work and my written works. It's the 21st century. Everything is a text and a way of telling a story. It doesn't matter to me if the words I write are never seen by an audience the way they are in my films, or if they are read by an audience and never seen on screen. The distinctions only matter to those who like to label people.
I define myself as a writer, director, producer, and star because I write, direct, produce, and star in my works. I generally tend to do comedy or romantic comedy. I would say that I am a comedian. My works have a romantic element to them, but I'm funnier than a typical romantic comedy. Come to think about it, I am more romantic than a typical comedy.
How about we just agree to not reallly define me by the terms that we typically know? I mean, my last film won Best Experimental at a film festival in Mumbai, India. It was a modern day retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I based it largely on my own life. In fact, it was the most autobiographical piece I have ever done.
I don't think it is a good thing when a movie about your love life is deemed the best experimental film at a festival. It wasn't even anything unusual. It was your typical boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl in the end love story. It's not like we haven't see that before. Of course, if any body wants to credit me with that, I will gladly accept it.
