In this, the first volume of the three that form his autobiography, we learn of his childhood and early adulthood. We start to gain some understanding of his background as an engineer, his involvement with vintage cars, and his internal conflict between his concern at the destruction of the landscape by man and his passion for machines, particularly cars and trains, but also the heavy engineering with which he was involved as an apprentice.
The book concludes with his marriage to Angela just before Word War II, and the start of the long cruise on the narrowboat Cressy.
Well written and revealing much that explains the back-story to Narrow Boat.
