"Marwan," a novel by Aram Schefrin, is a taut, well-paced exploration of a key episode in contemporary history. It is suspenseful, illuminating, and brilliantly balanced between the compelling narration of known facts - from the group's first coming together in Hamburg, Germany, to the moments before the jets they were to hijack took off - and an imaginative response to unanswered questions.

I found this book online while doing some research for one of my article. I am taking away one star because of some shortcomings that I found; otherwise I would say I was all hooked up to this book and wanted to read and know more. Schefrin has done an excellent job of approaching this controversial and emotional topic. He has brilliantly mixed facts from news reports, and database with fiction. This book provides a balanced look at how several of the events of 9/11 could have unfolded.

I understand the reaction of authorities and the author when he tried to distribute his book in early 2003. Marwan: An autobiography of 9/11 terrorist is a brilliant effort by the author to think from the eyes of a terrorist. Schefrin provides a very close to reality portrait of Marwan and other terrorists’ thoughts and feelings, their confusions and their doubt. The book is about how an Egyptian planner, a Saudi pilot among other 11 candidates for the mission, so very different in their ideas and style of living could fly planes into the buildings on 9/11. The book is about how did the plot develop and who developed it?
I applaud the effort because after such a heinous crime where the whole world is wounded and so many deaths occur, the author could think broadly and think beyond the grief and anger. It is indeed a humongous effort to research about the terrorists, their daily life styles, their thought processes, and researching the newspapers and reports. There is a good percentage of people who instead of being angry about the terrorist acts, want to know what is the root cause, what exactly caused this human to pick up weapons, get manipulated and cause destruction.
