I was attracted to this book because we adopted a treeing walker coonhound this past June. We have been having difficulties with her and trying to figure out why she acts the way she does. During and after reading this book, I realized we had been expecting the wrong things from our Indiana and pressuring her to become a dog she was not meant to be.

This is a short story - not a book. It was a quick read and well worth it. The author writes this from the point of view of her dog, Emma. Multiple times while reading this gem I burst out laughing, not just because of the things Emma got herself into, but because I could see Indiana doing the exact same thing if she had the chance. This is a must read for people trying to raise a TWC as a house dog and not a hunter.
Of course the author had the ideal home for a TWC: lots of woods to run off leash in and wildlife in the area. Not all of us can be so lucky, but the key lesson from the author is to maintain a sense of humor when it comes to your canine companion.
Definitely worth the read of you have about 2-3 hours free time.

Coonhounds are very intelligent dogs, just incredibly stubborn, free spirited and energetic. The most important lesson that I've taken from this book is that you can beat yourself over the head all day long trying to fight the natural behavior of your coonhound, but the only way to keep from pulling out all your hair is to think outside the box and train along your pup's natural grain.
I'm just glad our little girl only barks obnoxiously when chasing something. Otherwise I'm sure we'd have been evicted by now.

Cute little story.....I can see Gideon acting the same way in a lot of respects. Except the raccoon part. Gideon is scared of raccoons. Go figure. But he loves deer, as Emma does. So, there is that....,
