Territorial governer, US senator, and one of two who voted against the Tonkin Gulf resolution, Gruening is a personal hero of mine and an eyewitness to most of the birthing pains of the state of Alaska. The chapter where he reports on Elizabeth Peratrovich's speech to the Territorial Legislature in support of Native rights will knock you on your butt.
