Ariel
The basis for Georgette Heyer's historical romance The Spanish Bride. Awonderful firsthand account of an officer in the Napoleonic wars who married a young Spanish noblewoman the first day he met her and took her on campaign with him throughout the war. She was only 14 when they met. Today he would be charged with statutory rape. But in those days it was high romance. And after all, Juliet was 14 too. Smith writes vividly and concisely, with dash and humor and pathos.
