The life of one of the world's most influential climate-change scientists, and his battle to get the truth heard
Sir John Houghton's life chronicles the history of climate science, and this, his life story, is a
wake-up call for those who care about the weather, the environment, and their impact upon our lives.
As progress has been made in the scientific measuring of climate, a worrying picture has emerged. And as Houghton and others have sought to make those worries clear, they have discovered that, for some, this is an inconvenient truth. Houghton says "The warning is now urgent. The science is now robust, time is moving on, and humankind is responding far too slowly. God has granted us stewardship of this planet. It is a creation full of wonder and we must do everything in our power to keep it so." Sir John Houghton is still battling to have his voice heard, and this book, his story serves as ammunition for the fight. Buy it, read it, pass it on.

While this book had a lot of really good content, it was massively let down by the writing. It seemed almost as though the ghost writer had just written down everything Sir John had said, word for word. The result was an overuse of the word fun and many strangely short sentences, coming across as overly simplistic.
I was tempted to rate it as 3 stars due solely to the few chapters that were done pretty well - ones which detailed conflicts surrounding reports or policy making about climate change

I was tempted to rate it as 3 stars due solely to the few chapters that were done pretty well - ones which detailed conflicts surrounding reports or policy making about climate change. I was given the book as I study meteorology, and from that perspective it is still useful to have read the book and be aware of some of the history of the climate change debate, it's just a shame that the writing makes it such a disappointing and frustrating read.

John Houghton is a climate scientist of international renown. In the Eye of the Storm is his autobiography. He tells of his growing up years in a Christian home, his formal education, his early experiments, and his extensive research in climate change. I was impressed with his openness. Sir John puts the science of climate change in terms any layman can understand and explains why the American Right balks at legislating climate change solutions. I, for one, have been won over by the facts put forth in this well-written autobiography. I recommend this one!
