New York. If you can make it there, you can't make it anywhere else.

"Mayor" has a strange launching point given that New York City was looking at six more years of Ed Koch when it was published and that it came on the heels of his surprising defeat in the Democratic gubernatorial primary to Mario Cuomo.

One of those monthly selections from the Book-of-the-Month Club that I purchased in 1984 because I forgot to send that damned reply card. I finally got around to reading it. Written by Koch near the end of his second term as Mayor of New York City. Most of the political names mentioned I recall, but my recollections of those people are vague. Koch toots his own horn constantly, but comes across as I guy I could like. His portrayal of President Jimmy Carter tainted my image of Carter a bit.

I saw this book on my grandmother's bedside table years ago, and made a mental note to pick it up one day. The cover has a cute photograph of Koch standing with his arms raised up with Manhattan and the twin towers behind him (I think he's standing in Queens). Not sure if I'll get through the whole thing - I might skip to the chapters "The Charlotte Street Projects - The Politics of Urban Decay" and "The Transit Strike: A Victory For All New Yorkers."
