This book is a set of diary-type notes from the life of someone who wandered around Europe pushing a shopping cart and making a living painting portraits and doing odd jobs. I think I bought it out of a bargain bin around 1974. I have read it several times, and my brothers also greatly enjoyed it. I think I bought it out of a bargain bin around 1974. I have read it several times, and my brothers also greatly enjoyed it. I would say that the books it most reminds me of are the autobiographical works of Laurie Lee (Cider with Rosie, and probably even more "As I walked out one midsummer morning"). It contains a lovely Zenonian paradox, and a memorable description of his assistance at a family birthday party, where the children were sent out and had to toss a coin at each intersection to determine whether they should go left or right. The winner would be the child who got furthest. "I forgot to mention a time limit..."
