A real rags to riches story concerning one of our most popular comedians – Michael McIntyre. Bombastic, gauche, upper-class-twittery, sweet, charming Michael. He is almost as good on paper as he is in the flesh.
He comes from a very eccentric family, and that in itself makes entertaining reading. Add a sprinkling of Michael’s humour and you are guffawing regularly throughout the book.

I was struck by how much of his humour seems based on his real life. So many comedians tell outrageous stories about their experiences, but in Michael’s instance they appear to be true. Life as a series of comedy sketches. He and his family radiate a peculiar mix of diffidence, kindness, laxity and showing-off-ness which I found endearing, odd and sometimes distasteful. For instance his mother used to clear her car by just throwing rubbish like magazines out of the window as she drove along. His grandmother was just plain wicked – horribly unkind. But there are also warm and loving figures in his life; his wonderfully supportive sister Lucy, his kind and generous dad and step-dad, and his loving and incredibly stoic wife Kitty.
His attitude to money is wantonly cavalier. Luckily he became very rich, and thus his spendthrift ways did not prove his downfall. In this respect he was amazingly lucky.
What else? The biggest turn around in Michael’s life was when he changed agents. Danny Julian and Addison Cresswell of the “Off the Kerb” agency revolutionized his life. From doing a series of boring, mundane, small time comedy gigs, he was catapulted into the big time. I always naively thought that one agent was much the same as another. They seem sort of background shadowy figures, just shovelling around a bit of routine admin. But this book set me straight. A good agent can make a life or death difference to your career......and Cresswell and Julian rocketed Michael’s career into big time success. Obviously he had the talent in the first place - but it took the machinations of a first class agency to bring in the good times. A Royal Variety performance, various television shows, and a four night gig at London's O2 Arena (holding 16,000 people each night), well, that is success.
So, all’s well that ends well, and Michael is going to live happily ever after. Anyway I hope so. He seems a nice guy.
The last three library books I have read were all blighted with underlinings, marginalia or just plain hooligan alterations. This book was in the last category. Someone reading it had obviously taken umbrage to Kenny Everett, who was mentioned a lot throughout the book, (Michael's father was co-writer of his television shows) and every time his name cropped up in the book it was altered, or things that were said about him were changed.
This really disrupts the flow of the reading process - as do all book doodlings. I usually read with an eraser to remove them as I go along, *insert halo here* but obviously if it's in biro this isn't possible. I find it hard to believe that nitwits use libraries - they don't seem nitwit-attracting institutions - but obviously they do. Bah!
(Doodling in your own books is a completely different activity. It's when you know they are going to to be read by other people that it becomes boorish.)
Michael never ceases to amaze me on stage and in his book he is exactly the same! His funny attitude and character really shines through even in the difficult parts of his life. I would give this book to anyone I knew because McIntyre just makes you smile with every page turn!

Michael McIntyre is a British comedian that I love watching on TV and he has been actively performing stand-up since approximately 2006. This is his story.
This is the first AudioBook that I have ever fully listened to and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The book is read by Michael himself and I'm glad he did it, it helped me understand the story better and definitely enhance the experience for me. "Life and Laughing" is Michael's autobiography and it tells his life story from the first experience of life that he remembers to the very point to which he decided to write this book.
Listening to Michael tell his story made me both laugh out loud and feel extremely sorrowful for some things he had to go through growing up. There were definitely moments that I rewinded and listened to over and over again because I found them that funny, I just had to control my laughter - I was listening to this in school, imagine how crazy I looked! Michael tells of his relationships with various family members, how he coped with his parents' divorce and the loss of particular family members.
There isn't much else I can say about this book, if you're aware of who Michael is and you enjoy his comedy, I highly recommend you pick up this book and give it a go. Although, I feel like I wouldn't have enjoyed the book as much had I read a physical copy in comparison to the AudioBook, the way Michael reads his story is fantastic and really does enhance the story a huge amount.

The book managed to be both funny and heart-warming in parts and if you are a fan of his then you are sure to enjoy reading "Life and Laughing". I loved the way he spoke about his parents, his father in particular, there is something special about showbiz stories from the era his father worked in television.I think having such a talented father foreshadowed his success, certain families seem to have a knack for being entertainers and I think it must certainly be one that runs in his family.
My favourite bit of the book was possibly when he went to buy weed in a council estate in Edinburgh and asked someone with a tattoo of Scotland on their face if he could pay using a bankers cheque, I laughed outloud reading this scene, McIntyre is an endearing protagonist and antics like this made him even more likeable.
The only thing that stopped me fully sympathising with McIntyre as he struggled to become a comedian was how privileged he was, he claims he was surviving on tesco value food and driving a broken car yet spent £10,000 on his honeymoon and acted like not having a main course at the wedding was a real hardship... has the guy not heard of buffets and package holidays to Spain? I mean he was in a lot of debt but rather than living within his means wracked up even more and then wanted my sympathy. I am glad his career turned out well and he managed to pay off his loans for his sake!

I like Michael McIntyre. I think he's one of the best comics around at the moment. And this book is extremely well written and put together. The beginning and end link very well. However, I was a bit disappointed. I will admit there are some great laughs in this book.
But the first quarter is basically about his parents when he was growing up. It's just not that interesting - and a lot of it seems to be based on people recollecting his own childhood back to him, which comes across as a bit stilted. Roger Moore's childhood was a lot more enjoyably recounted. Although Rog' didn't have as many issues as this chap seems to have needed to work through.
I think I'm being a bit harsh with the 2 stars because i was expecting a laugh a minute. Although his father lead an unusual life, it doesn't make up for the fact that the book isn't that interesting a read. He was basically a posh kid from an extremely privileged background who had problems at school and getting girls. The first bit seems genuinely like him trying to work through some of his family issues. The humour, where it does appear, stands out as a bit uncomfortable in the midst of his parents' odd relationship. The book gets much better when he realises that he's funny and starts going on about his life from about the age of 12 or so. The humour works much more sublimely - whether or not the tales are entirely true - and reading about his struggles are made extremely funny. Similarly, the funniest tales come from his time briefly at college in Edinburgh particularly when he's trying to buy drugs.
And then the book gets all romantic when he goes on about wooing his wife over two years. This drags a fierce amount.
I'm not sure what i was expecting, but it wasn't this. I guess the clue was in the fact it was an autobiography. Overall, he's an extremely lucky man and deserves the success he's had.
Best joke - while shopping in Ikea and looking at a bed, the sales assistant asks himself and his wife if they'd like to buy it - "i'll need to sleep on it."

I really enjoyed this. It is a gripping story of the struggle to success, which I found difficult to put down.
The tone suits Michael's voice down TO A TEE! Stupidly, some of the sentences had me bobbing my head along in a McIntyre-esque style, as if delivering a punch line.

His grandmother is one of the best characters I have read in a biography … ever. She is rich and eccentric, jealous of Michael’s relationship and obsessed with people marrying her family to cash in on her fortune. McIntyre writes her with such comic finesse. The crowning glory for me was when she cheats at Scrabble, because of her accent she wins with ‘H - E - N – D – Z, see Hendz,’ confidently getting away with this attempt at ‘hands’.

This book is very funny - I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Michael himself, so I literally heard his opinions coming across - and everything from his generally poor attempt at academia to his horrific attempts at getting a girlfriend are addressed in a hilarious manner. I thoroughly recommend the audiobook as you feel the emotions Michael felt throughout his life.

This is just good fun. It's also an easy start into the world of biographies, which was good since I personally hadn't read that many. Its a nice reminder of how success just doesn't come as quick as you would expect, and not as depicted in most fictional books and movies. This is a great example of how hard work and strong will really is needed all the way through, and how talent - although important - is secondary to persistence.

I laughed out loud so many times that my girlfriend now demanded to read it too. Watch a few standup routines with the author on YouTube; if you like them you will most probably enjoy the book.
I'm a huge fan of Michael McIntyre as a comedian; I adore his stand-up and it always seems to make me laugh no matter how many times I've seen it! I wanted something funny to read; I know I find Michael McIntyre funny SO I spotted this available on the library's site and decided to go for it.
It is, as I hoped, really very entertaining! Laugh-out-loud type funny, which is, as you can imagine, not ideal for public transport. The tone was exactly like that of his stand-up and that was perfect.
What I wasn't prepared for though was that it wouldn't just be funny. The parts of the story where life isn't all rosy feel very genuine and are fascinating. I never knew how much comedians go through before they are 'recognised' and I do now, so that's a bonus.
There isn't really a great deal I can offer more than that, I don't think: the writing is superb, the tone alternates between amused/self-depracating and touchingly honest and it's a great insight into the work required to be in any comedic profession.
Overall: As far as my experience goes, this is a great autobiography - it doesn't take itself too seriously and is humble but, most of all, it's a witty and light read that will keep you giggling until Christmas. I'd recommend it to fans of McIntyre's stand-up. To those who haven't heard of him - head on over to YouTube - the guy's awesome!

the only thing that did bother me about reading this book is that normally i read celebrity biographies in the voice of said celebrity. i didn't with this one, and i think that's possibly what lost the comedy on me a bit. i suppose that's partly my fault, in that case, but i am slightly worried that i was reading michael mcintyre's autobiography in MY voice...

He has broken records for sell-out tours and venues in the UK, and the DVDs of his arena shows do well. He seemed, as is the nature of things, to have suddenly emerged as a fully-fledged and confident comic into public consciousness in the first decade of this century, but of course success is rarely an instant rags-to-riches story. In McIntyre’s case not at all — if anything, it was a riches-to-rags-to-riches tale, as this autobiography outlines.
McIntyre is first and foremost an observational comic. Not for him the one-liners, the puns or the catchphrases. And his humour is of the engaging self-deprecating kind, not the comedy of cruelty or satire where the butt of criticism is elsewhere and never aimed by the stand-up at themselves. Not only is self-deprecation disarming; it also, paradoxically, holds a mirror up to everyone. If, as some behaviourists suggests, the smile is an ingratiating reflex to stress and the laugh an explosive reaction to threat, McIntyre’s situational anecdotes are familiar scenarios presented in an unfamiliar way, designed to elicit the shock of recognition. Yes, I behave that way, who’d have guessed anybody else did? Oh no, I’ve said and done things like that too, how embarrassing! That’s pretty much how I thought but how ridiculous I must be now that you’ve put it that way? In other words, McIntyre’s self-deprecation is a way for others to participate in a communal act of self-deprecation. And that can’t be bad.
A good example, which males like me (and no doubt many females too) realise is an accurate self-portrait, is McIntyre’s ‘man-drawer’. If you don’t squirm as you recognise a bit of you or a loved one in this sequence then you won’t find him funny in the least.
His ‘first’ autobiography (he was only in his mid-30s when this book was written) reads as if he’s recounting it personally to each reader, the same jokes against himself, the yeast of exaggeration provoking laugh-out-loud moments. Though apparently born with, if not a silver spoon, then at least an EPNS utensil in his mouth, his upper middle-class privileged upbringing was blighted by divorce and separation. Unable to settle down to a humdrum but steady job he decided to capitalise on his ability to make people laugh. This represents the ‘rags’ period of his life, as success and its concomitant fame-and-fortune eluded him. His eventual breakthrough came with an appearance on the Royal Variety Performance in 2006 at the age of thirty, and the rest is public history.
I’m not a fan of gossip magazines and celebrity news, but it’s hard not to be impressed by the roll-call of the successful and famous that he brushed up against, often inadvertently, in his early life and his later climb up the greasy pole. But this is not kiss-and-tell celeb tattle — that’s not McIntyre’s style or nature. Instead, what comes across is an individual who’s as likeable and, as importantly, human as his public persona suggests. And — to add to the charm — there are also plentiful pictures, wittily captioned with the author’s by now familiar trademark self-deprecatory remarks and co-starring his recognisable shock of hair.
I love a good autobiography, and this exceeded others that I have read by other comedians. Michael McIntyre's story is one of 'rags to riches'. He didn't have it handed to him on a plate, he worked so hard, but he still used his everyday life events in his acts when he performed, unlike many comedians who grossly exaggerate. Throughout the book, Michael is very open and honest about his relationship with his family members, and especially when he talks about the sad passing of his dad. I liked the end when he updated about people who featured in the book and how he came to write the autobiography. I truly loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone who loves Michael's humour. After all, Michael is a fantastic comedian, who can make you laugh just as hard on paper as in stand up!

Michael McIntyre is one of my most favourite comedians. A story of rags to riches, you learn all about how the funny man became so popular. The book had me in stitches and the pictures were a particular favourite.
He discusses his children Lucas & Oscar and how he met and fell in love with his wife Kitty, he also discusses how he never actually finished university - or rather doesnt remember what course he was studying nor if he finished.
I don't normally read autobiographies (or ever as a matter of fact), but seeing that Michael M. was the first comedian to ever reduce me to actual laughter (thus becoming my favourite comedian to this day), my curiosity guided my hands to yank the hardback from the library shelf. Once I turned the last page of the book I lingered in my seat processing what I had just read and realised I was genuinely impressed. Upon reading chapter by chapter, I found myself (as expected) chuckling at some points and roaring loudly at some; but I also found myself, very surprisingly, moved - and I mean gripped-by-the-heartstrings moved.
His story is real, down-to-earth, witty, relatable, funny but also sad (especially reading through the financial struggles), with a well-written voice. I completely understand trying to find your calling during A-Levels and then trying to achieve it afterwards through sheer determination. I'm still trying to get there myself.
I also want to take the time to just gush over the admiration and respect I have for the hard work this man put into making his dreams a reality.
Keep doing what you're doing, Michael, because you're my inspiration.

I'll never watch his shows in the same way again! Would definitely recommend.

Hubby read this a couple of years ago on holiday, and the fact he made to the end of a book speaks volumes, so now it was my turn. He certainly had an interesting childhood, I hadn't realised his dad was in the entertainment business and there are a few famous names that crop up on a regular basis who were family friends. his struggle to become a household name was certainly no easy ride and shows that a good agent is key. I was surprised at how much he struggled with his finances, I really can't get my head round how people get themselves into that state. I did expect to laugh more at this book, although I have since found out he narrated his own audio book and I kind of wish I listened to it instead.

Michael's book is very funny and the manner in which he writes is similar to how he speaks on stage. I haven't done any research on an audiobook, but if there is one I truly hope he is the one reading it aloud. When I read this book, I read it in his voice and this only adds to how authentic his words sound because they make the book more personal. Michael's voice enables us to picture him as a little boy at school and as an awkward teenager asking girls to dance.
Another thing I love about the book is the inclusion of real photographs from particular moments throughout his life so far. I love the insight this combined with his words provide on his life as a lot of this information is not likely to be talked about by Michael himself when he is on stage, so it is lovely to have this background information on him which I never knew before.

Although the book may not tickle the funny bone, it was still very interesting to find out about McIntrye's life and how got to where he is today. For the most part of the book, the pace is good as he talks about how he grew up and discovered comedy. But another downfall of the book is that it goes off at a tangent, meaning you forget the original point. This book is great if you're wanting to learn more about Michael McIntyre and his life, but not if your wanting a fast paced and comical read."

Once I started I couldn't put this book down. And, just like McIntyre's stand up, it was laugh out loud, tears rolling down your face, oh my god I'm struggling to breathe hillarious. Highly recommended.

i never though that someone as talented as Michael McIntyre have struggled at the beginning that hard, he is great! this book was like his author funny . it was enjoyable and exciting .
One of my favourite comedians, this book had me laughing out loud when I was reading it which made me look a bit odd since I was on a plane at the time.
Really enjoyable quick read
I’ve not read a great many auto-biographies but this is one of the better ones that I have. Michael McIntyre is, of course, a comedian famous for his jokes about everyday life and his non-stop running about on stage.

It feels like McIntyre has been around for a long time but this book really does show that his fame is quite a recent thing. This book is full of his humour and he pulls no punches when discussing his quest for love and fame, both with varying degrees of success. I found it amazing the links he has to such diverse things as Countdown and Kenny Everitt! Without spoiling too much his life really is a riches to rags to riches story, it’s no wonder he has such good material for his stage shows.
A word of warning though, there are some parts where I couldn’t completely believe him and I’m sure they were put in the book for comic effect. Or at least made much more humorous then they actually were.
A highly recommended read, particularly if you are a fan….you will never see Jongliurs in the same light again!
