In England, where he spent ten seasons leading his storied club Manchester United and his nation to soccer glory, he is so wildly popular that his countrymen voted him the face they'd most want to see imprinted on their money. (Winston Churchill finished second.) In Japan, where he is worshiped as much for his headline-making fashion trends as for his ability to bend a ball around a wall of defenders, women styled their bikini waxes after the blond mohawk he sported during the 2002 World Cup. And in Spain, within days of his $41 million trade to Real Madrid, his new team received two million requests to buy his number 23 jersey. The legend of David Beckham -- soccer god, global sex symbol, style icon -- has been celebrated around the world, arguably more than Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan combined. Now, with the publication of his long-awaited autobiography, the man who inspired the surprise hit movie "Bend It Like Beckham" is set to conquer the last remaining outpost where soccer is not a national religion: the United States.
"Beckham" is a classic rags-to-riches saga: a boy, David, is born to a poor East End London family. He develops prodigious soccer skills, and his parents nurture him until he becomes one of the most gifted athletes of his generation. He grows up to marry Victoria -- a Spice Girl, "Posh" -- and enters a celebrity whirlwind of Princess Diana -- esque proportions. Together, the Beckhams are Britain's new royal couple -- their 240-acre estate outside of London is known as Beckingham Palace -- and their presence at parties or charity events guarantees endless tabloid stories and photos as well as adoring mobs that must be restrained by police barricades. Their life is as much a study in managing fame as it is in sports and pop phenomena.
In "Beckham" he talks candidly about the pressures of celebrity -- his wife and sons were the targets of a 2002 kidnapping plot; how he balances his roles as a devoted husband and besotted father with his globetrotting existence as an international soccer player; the behind-the-scenes stories of his most memorable career moments, such as the penalty kick against archrival Argentina in the World Cup that redeemed him to a nation who blamed him for their failure in the previous World Cup; the controversy surrounding his move to Real Madrid and the falling out with the man who shaped his career, Manchester United's famously combative manager Sir Alex Ferguson; and, finally, his love of America -- his first son was conceived in and named Brooklyn -- where, like the great Pele, David can imagine playing out his final seasons.
So much has been written about David Beckham that it's easy to think we know everything about the world's most famous athlete, but only Beckham himself can set the record straight on his beliefs, his dreams, his loves, his fears, and, above all, his sense of who he is. "Beckham "is an intimate account of an extraordinary life, a life in which, against all odds, he has managed to keep both feet on the ground.

This autobiography about David Beckham shares a lot of his interesting and shocking opinions on his life being a world class and legendary soccer player. His writing really opens up and expands his life from just being a soccer player and includes a lot of stories that share the importance of his family. The book starts off when he was only a couple years old and ends when he is in his thirties. His autobiography in my opinion really explains a well rounded and developed story on his life that includes many of the significant events in his life like being signed to Manchester United at 13, marrying his wife Victoria, captaining the England nation team, and becoming a dad. Some of the stories are real eye openers like how David and his family recieved many death threats and news that his wife and kids are going to get kidnapped. His autobiography really stresses the role that the press, media, and his fans had in his life and I think is really demonstrated many of the true thoughts he felt growing up. Soccer is obviously heavily stressed and since I am a soccer player too and follow a lot of European soccer, it was easy and very interesting to follow along and clearly understand the information and explinations about his life as a soccer player, playing in all the different tournaments, and how much he had to train. It was sort of relatable, even though he was a professional. Beckham's autbiography is really interesting and all together successfully brings the reader closer to his life as he shares his virtues and past.

I personally think the book could be intended for anybody really. In this book there is really no true problem but he does talk about his hardships growing up and even in his professional career and how he was able to overcome those hard times. The setting of the book takes place in Chingford, London as he was growing up but goes from Manchester, Madrid, L.A. and many more places that had an impact on his career and life. If the setting was changed it would change the whole story of Beckham's life and would not be the same considering this is a true story that Beckham tells. The main character is David Beckham. He is perhaps(my opinion) one of the best to ever play the game of soccer. Through all the ups and downs, he always finds a way out of the darkest times(1998 world cup vs. Argentina).
Raised by Sandra and David Edward Beckham in a poor home in Chingford was David Beckham. David talks about his early years in Chingford playing soccer and trying to decide which team to support, Tottenham loved by his Grandma and Grandpa, or Manchester United loved by his parents. He talks about going to his dad's soccer games and practices as a young boy and even playing at his dad's practices against the big men. He says even though they were not always so gentle when playing with him, he said it made him strong and to always get up when you get knocked down. Later in his young career at the Bobby Charlton Soccer school he accomplished wonders. He was later signed in 1988 to Manchester United where his career kicked off as a school boy . He was putting ah in peoples eyes as they watched him play but ten years from his signing date with Manchester he would be in what he referred to "The darkest days of my life". He made his England debute in 1996. Later, in the 1998 World Cup Semi-Final against Argentina, he was fouled by Argentinian player, Simon. He retaliated and received a red card. He was hated by many and even accused of England getting kicked out of the World Cup. But, he pressed forward by marrying Victoria, scoring the goal against Greece to take England to the Fifa World Cup Final, winning many awards and trophies with Manchester United, and later having the chance to play for Real Madrid in 2003. Later he would make the trip to the Americas to play for L.A. Galaxy in 2007. It is a very good story told by the person who knows it best.
I liked the whole book because I have been a long time Beckham fan and it was cool to learn a little more in depth about his life. The quotes I liked were found on page 29 where it said, "I'll tell you what: I'll sign you for Manchester United using this pen.",because it really kicked off his career, and on page 203 where it said,"Sorry to ring this early but I'm about to announce the squad. I've picked a young group and some new young players. I think the right thing is for you to captain them. I've got absolutely no doubt about you being ready for the job. I wanted you to know before I tell anybody else," because it shows that he was not only a player but he was also a leader. I think the theme of this book and what Beckham shows in his words in this book are that you can get knocked to the ground so hard and may think you can never get up but with strength you can come back stronger and show everyone how good you are. I would recommend this book to almost anybody because it is almost like telling a success story. It may be a unique book because I think many people think that rich people or people in stardom have it all good but Beckham discusses his weaknesses and trials and how overcoming those and looking beyond them made him successful.
The life of David Beckham is anything but boring. This book explains his life and his love for the game of soccer. As a little boy everyone knew he had talent and this book is from his point of veiw about his clubs and his team mates. I am not much of a reader but I do love soccer so this book made me like to read a litte and it made me think of myself as a player when I read about David when he was my age. I wish there were more books out there for me to read. Great book.
When I found this at The Caring Place, I had to buy it. I wasn't sure what to expect - ridiculously talented and good-looking futbol star or normal guy. I was happy to find him a down to earth, family man that, while mad about soccer and being the best he can be, a kind of shy and family oriented man. I found the book honest and, as a soccer player & fan, fun. I recommend it to those that are die hard soccer fans and have a soft spot for Beckham.

David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE is an English professional footballer, who plays in midfield. He currently plays for and captains Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy and is also a member of the England national team. He earned his 100th cap for England against France in March 2008.
He has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, and in 2004 was the world's highest-paid footballer. He was Google's most searched of all sports topics in both 2003 and 2004. Such global recognition has made him an elite advertising brand and a top fashion icon. Beckham was captain of England from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006. He made 58 appearances as captain, and ended his tenure in that role after the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. He continued to make contributions for the England national team in 2007 competitions. Beckham captained Manchester United for the first time on October 21st 2000 in a Premiership match against Leeds United, coming on as a substitute for injured team captain Roy Keane. Beckham went on to score a free-kick in this match, which finished 3-0.
Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left Manchester United to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, where he remained for four seasons. While at Madrid, Beckham became the first British footballer to play 100 Champions League matches. In his final season, Real clinched the 2006-07 La Liga championship title (Beckham's only major trophy with the club) in the final game of the season on 17 June. In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham would leave Real Madrid and sign a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham's new contract with the Galaxy, effective 1 July 2007, gave him the highest salary of any MLS player in history. He debuted for the team on 21 July in a friendly versus Chelsea at the Home Depot Center, and on 15 August, he had his first start with the team, scoring his first goal in the 2007 SuperLiga semi-final. His first league start then came on 18 August in front of a record crowd at Giants Stadium.

“away from fast food - for three weeks already. And I was starting to miss the occasional burger and fries. I assumed there'd be a few of the other lads feeling the same way. I talked to Sven, who thought it wouldn't do any harm, and then had a word with the England chefs. On the Wednesday night we all trooped down to dinner. The doors of the dining room were shut and there were two giant golden arches stuck up on them. We all went inside and there was a McDonald's takeaway mountain waiting for us: more burgers, cheeseburgers and chips than you've ever seen piled up in one room in your life. It was a complete surprise to all the players. We just devoured everything: it was like watching kids going mad in a candy store. And it worked. We did it again before we played Denmark. Maybe fast food was what was missing from our preparations for facing Brazil.”
