At the age of 17, the author saw her native France overrun by the Nazis. Working for the Resistance and later for the American OSS, Helene constantly had to put her mission ahead of her safety. In her fast-paced, poignant, and highly personal autobiography, Deschamps challenges all readers to see the consequences of the choices they face today. Photos. Young Adult.
There's a part of me that's starting to wonder what I would do should the zombie apocalypse actually happen, so I've been turning to survival tales for insight. Deschamps' book starts off light-hearted, with the wide eyed innocence of the adventure of becoming an informer/spy. As it progresses, she finds herself in more and more dangerous positions, and frankly, I had to keep reminding myself that she wrote the book, so she obviously survived. There was a disconnect between the beginning of the book and the end, where we jump from harmless document running to being on the run from the Milice to infiltrating enemy lines to gain information from the locals. I felt that I was missing something, some story, that explained her growing despair. (There is a story near the end, but it didn't explain her
evolution of consciousness
, shall we say.) Considering this is a memoir and not a Hollywood story, the ending was satisfactory and realistic, though bitter-sweet.
I liked this book. The author has a clear voice and her stories of luck, because that is what is was, led me to think that I wouldn't be so good at spying. I'm too honest, and I don't think on my feet that quickly. It is also interesting to learn about the French resistance during WWII, that the war wasn't just the Americans/British against the Germans. However, I would have liked more information about how Deschamps' activities assisted the Allies

[, although, she herself may not have known and that feeling of her contribution possibly not being worth the consequences she experienced could be part of her own dissatisfaction

In the author's note, she says "My life as a spy was more action-filled than any fictionalized account could ever be." She wasn't lying.

some of the other characters had a "happily ever after." Not in

. The other characters were pretty much all dead or reported dead. Maybe I'm too much of a romantic, but I really wanted Helene to marry someone and be happy, especially after loosing so many friends and romantic prospects during the war.
I'm glad I read it, even if it was sad. I don't recommend it for young readers (rated pg-13).

First read this as a young teenager; it was one of my favorites. This is a great book with a strong female character. I can't wait to settle in and read it again.
