But the background of that time was frightening and often tragic. World War II was on everybody’s mind and in everyone’s heart. Brothers and sisters and cousins and friends were sent away to fight against evil that threatened to conquer the world. American Armed Forces and ordinary Americans believed fervently that they were the ones destined to save the world.
