With endless newspaper column inches devoted to one of the most talked about men in the world, it seems that we know everything there is to know about David Beckham. Or do we? This is Beckham's life story in his own words. The book deals with his complex relationship with United boss Alex Ferguson and looks at how he handles the pressure of playing alongside some of the most volatile footballers of his generation, from the likes of Cantona, Schmeichel and Keane. It tells the England story, from being vilified by the nation before returning as the prodigal son and almost single-handedly guiding his country as captain to the 2002 World Cup Finals. From Beckham himself, we gain an insight into the family man behind the famous footballer, the international model and fashion leader. He describes how he first met and then married ex-Spice girl Victoria Adams and the upbringing of their two children Brooklyn and Romeo. He goes on to discuss how his family's every step is monitored by a posse of newshounds and paparazzi. He also tells of the influence of his parents, growing up as a shy youngster in the family home and how their subsequent split affected him. The book was written with the assistance of Tom Watt.

Yeah, I might be a bit biased here. I'm a fan of Manchester United and like the way David Beckham plays "the beautiful game." Although I read this a while back I do remember devouring the pages with great interest, not finding a dull moment in it. From his 1998 World Cup disgrace to the fighting with Fergie this was a very interesting read, and to hear it from David Beckham's point of view even more so. I must admit I was annoyed with Fergie quite a bit, the nerve of him telling Becks to put soccer before his family as well as basically causing Becks to leave the team. Also, I felt sorry for Beckham in regards to what happened in 1998 when he got sent off from the World Cup after he reacted to what that Argentinian player did. I suppose others may still blame him, and that I may be more forgiving as I'm not English, but I understood why he reacted and the only annoyance I felt was to the Argentinian soccer player's unsportsmanship. It just shows how dirty the game can get, which also reminded me of the incident between Zinedine Zidane and the Italian player years later.
Anyway, if you're a fan of David Beckham or Manchester United read this, you should like it.

It begins at the beginning with his family life and journey through junior football to the professional game. Also including his England career under Hoddle, Keegan and Eriksson. Disclosure of behind the scenes M.U.F.C. incidents that are left out of both Scholes and Keane's books will be interesting to United fans.
A book that gets rid of much of the press hype that surrounds Posh and Becks and one of the better biogs from the modern game.

Also two disappointments: the premature writing of the book before his move to Los Angeles misses a significant chapter of his professional and personal life, which was missed by not waiting. Second, my version was likely edited for an American audience, as throughout the book the game is referred to as "soccer". Having heard David speak on various occasions, even as he moved to the Galaxy he still struggled to call it "soccer" for the American audience. I could be wrong, but I suspect a large bit of "find and replace" by the publishers. Call it what it is. . .

In this autobiography, written by David Beckham himself, comes to explain about every aspect of every moment in his life that have brought him to where he is today. Growing up through the years, David was only a school-boy footballer with ambition and passion for the worlds most famous sport, in which he committed his life to at a very young age. Making the decision to be committed to the world of football, Beckham comes to write his book, "My Side", in his own words about every action taken in his life since the day he was born, to the day he signed for Manchester United, then moved to play at other great professional clubs through out his career going to Preston North End, then Real Madrid, Milan, LA Galaxy, and finally retiring at the great club, Paris Saint Germain. Read this book to walk through every moment of a legends life.
As a football player myself, reading this autobiography of such a world class player, gives me a lot of hope in life about my football career and even every aspect of my life even when it does not involve the sport. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone; especially those people who have doubts about their life and what they will achieve in it. As one reads through this book, their level of confidence would go up, giving the situations that Beckham talks about, in which he went through. After reading this book, one will come to realize the possibilities and the chances in which people will get in life, even when they most expect it. I recommend it most to those who need reassurance that they will be successful in life, if they never give up on their dreams.

I like the book for many reasons that he tells you a lot of things that he did growing up. He gives his honest opinion on how he felt about the situation he was in .One example was when he got loaned out he thought that the team wanted him gone. I don't really dislike anything just that he shouldn't have gone to real Madrid but that's a personal reasons .The best part is that even if you even know a little bit of his life he gives you even more information that you didn't even know about.
I would recommend these book to Football/Soccer fans or Beckham fans. If you would want to read how it was for Beckham growing up ,and if you like looking through the view of a legend then definitely read this book. Other books that are similar to this is the other biography's like Pele . If you like book that's give descriptive writing then you would love this book. When he puts descriptive writing it reminds me of movies because you can just imagine what he's feeling and what he's seeing ,so as I said this book is perfect for soccer lovers who want descriptive writing .

So he's good looking and above average football player, and so what? He's not Eric Cantona or Raul Gonzales. And there are other players that should have or worth as much if not more hysteria.
So yeah, I like the story, but not the person. And yes people, it's possible. :)

Beckham: Both Feet on the Ground: An Autobiography
Before starting this book one must keep in mind that this is an autobiography. This means the information might be adjusted a bit. This is the introduction to a book about a great player. Here starts the story of one of histories best freekick takers, David Bakham. Anyways Beckham, a world renown football legend first stated at Manchester United but "My Manchester United contract had expired on the last day of June..." (Beckham 4). That was when the legend moved to Madrid.
Beckham describes the driving in Madrid as if "...everybody in Madrid drives like they’re chasing pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix" (Beckham 5). Not very far from Morocco then. Yet he is in the car REal Madrid sent for him and the press is all around him. Then the legend signs for Real Madrid. This is a great step in history. THis is not only for Real Madrid but for the world
While is the Real Madrid president's office Beckham met other legends. "Raul, Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos and their team-mates"(Beckham 7). He felt like an opponent to them as it was unusual to see that many different people. Still, he got to know them and know his manager. He had started this great friendship betwwen them. This was the start of a long period of history for Real Madrid.
Inspiration, Beckham is an inspiration to all footballers out there. He was inspired himself by great people. "Michael Jordan. He wasn’t just a hero for me..."(Beckham 13). Jordan had shown him persistence and determination. This is why Beckham chose the number 23 for his shirt. A legend inspires a legend who inspires a legend, legend-ception. This was an amazing fact to know.

Where it all started. Beckham as a boy was taught to play soccer. In fact, "As soon as I could walk my dad made sure I could kick a ball" (Backham 17). This was passed down to his children especially Brooklyn. By the age of three he could balance himself of a ball. He also knew basic techniques of football. This is an amazing feture to have at three.
His first expieriences with football was playing in Chase Lane Park. Everyday the neighbors would ask "‘Mrs Beckham? Can David come and have a game in the park?’" Most times she agreed (Beckham 19).He also practiced there with his dad since he kept destroying flower in there backyard. They started by control then striking sometimes it drove Beckham nuts. This proves that hard work pays off.
His dad had decided to stop playing soccer to coach him. "Even though i was seven then, i knew what the sacrifice meant" (Beckham 21). His dad loved football as did he. Sometimes they would go to his dads old club and practice there. There was a small field with a lounge near it. It was an ideal place. It was where Beckham started.
He came upon his best friend. His name was John Brown (not the guy from the Civil War). John, though not interested in football encouraged David. He would always hang out with him. He would support the team he played for. Yet as they say all good things have an end, David went to become a soccer player and John, abaker. "Ihad to go to a new school. I was heartbroken" (Beckham 22).

David's parents knew how much he loved football. They would put him in football schools and bought him football jerseys. "If it was soccer – or anything to do with soccer – I was there" (Beckham 23). His grandfather was awesome as well. He would watch all the games and play a lot. Once David had hit him so hard in the face that he broke his glasses. He did not care it was soccer.
His first team was the Ridgeway Rovers. The owner or CEO or leader of this was Stuart Underwood. "About 76 inches, with a big
booming voice and this fantastic presence about him...I was a little scared of him at first" (Beckham 25). In this team they got the chance to play with professional teams. They also had the chance to play in Germany and Holland. This gave them a big boost in football. They also learned about team spirit.
They had three main coaches, Stuart, Steve and Beckham's dad. Each of them focused on a certain skill. Steve was the tactics coach, Stuart the defender coach and Mr. Beckham dribbling. "They were honest people wanting to make the
team as good as they could" (Beckham 25). I had apperantly worked. They had a great team of players in professional football today. In the little leagues the won most matches until one day something happened. This changed Beckham forever.
At the end of a game Beckham went to his mom's car. There he noticed she was disturbed. He wondered and asked why she was troubled. "‘Lucky you had a good game today.’‘Why?’...‘That man over there: he’s a Man United scout’" (Beckham 35). This was a dream come true for DAvid. His name was Malcolm, and David owed him a ton. This man had started his proffensional soocer player. He was recruited for Man United and started his career and his life.

At Ridgeway the players got the right ideas. "One important rule was that if you didn’t turn up for training in the week, then you didn’t play at the weekend" (Beckham 26). This was a good notion to have so that the players wouldn't ever skip practice. Another notion was that showing off was no good. If the coaches were watching someone try to show off he would have had to do phisical work (ex. pushups, suicides etc.). This helped them focus on teamwork and made them better.
After a long period of time a United scout found him. "This was one of the best moments of my life" (Beckham 36). He had played a great game and was amazed to find out that there was a United scout. This was one of the best things of his life because he had always been a United fan. His father had always been a United fan. This meant that this was a dream come true for them.
"I may not have been United born, but i was defintely United bred" (Beckham 37). There was a great ordal to get in though. To pass Beckham had to go in a tournament far from home. This made him very home sick and he had a toothache. The next year things went better his parents were closer and he had won an epic prize. He got to play with Barcelona in the Nou Camp.
They went to Spain and then to the beautiful Nou Camp. This was a place where legends had been born" (Beckham 38). He was very thankful for opportunity. Though many problems had eccured then it was all worth it. The youth team got to play in the Camp Nou. David didn't care that he had lost he was having to much of a good time then he knew one thing he wanted to join the proffessional United team.

After a months of joining United David was able to afford his own place. That helped him settle and be comfortable. There is another thing or person that helped him be comfortabel with his life. She was "...a girl named Deana who I went out with for the best part of three years" (Beckham 52). Going out with Deana made him understand that thngs were trickier in life. This helped him make decision later in his carreer.
David met a lot of new people. Some of them thought he was a show off but later they became friends. "We were all about sixteen, on a tour together
and getting to know each other, as players and as people" (Beckham 54). With this team Beckham won his very first cup, The Milk Cup. This inspired him and pushed him to do better. That's what he did in his career.
David's father told him that even though he was in United he'd have to work hard. David practiced with the seniors and realized that he would have to work hard to stay in Machester. Their new coach was Eric, "Even now, a dozen
years on from first meeting him, I look to him for guidance and advice" (Beckham 55). When Eric complimented someone they would remember it the whole day. If he criticized someone for making a mistake, they would not repeat it. This helped his team win many titles and cups.
Eric was annoying sometimes. He would make David suffer by making him do headers. Since Beckham was small he wasn't really good at headers. "The ball was chipped up and you could only score with your head" (Beckham 58). That was fine until the defenders came crashing in to stop him. beckham understood though that Eric was exposing and fighting his weaknesses and that was the only way to become a better player.

Maybe I am a sap, but I think the effort to endear mostly works. At times the book drags, and there could or should be more football-- from my perspective the treble season gets the short shrift. One rather interesting bit was that he feels most himself when he's on the pitch, playing football. I wonder how many other footballers feel that way.
I have two publisher gripes: 1) WTF san serif font? Come on, it's a book, get a proper font. 2) Poor copy editing. There are periods in random places and stuff like that.
I love autobiographies and David Beckham was pretty much my first ever favourite athlete (although even as a kid I had the good sense not to like United, he somehow escaped the dislike I've harboured for most of their players—I've only recently warmed up to Cristiano Ronaldo despite supporting Real Madrid for quite some time) so I'm a little surprised I haven't read this before. But anyway, it was pretty good, and about what I was expecting; Beckham comes off pretty much as egotistical as you'd think when it comes to talking about the game, but doesn't hesitate to mock himself as far as other aspects of his life go (I enjoyed the account of the awkward beginning of his courtship with Victoria). One thing I like about this compared to some other footballing autobiographies I've read is that he really discusses the relationship between playing club football and international football, perhaps because he's had such an impact (positive and negative) on several of England's recent challenges. It's not the best sports autobiography I've read (that'd probably be Carraghers, although obviously I'm biased), but it's pretty good.
Oh, one complaint though, to the American editors—if someone's willing to read four hundred pages about Beckham, they're not going to have an issue with the term "football" rather than "soccer." Honestly. And also it was only a bit toward the end but it was difficult to tell whether the Ronaldo being referred to was Ronaldo or CR7. I just assumed it was Ronaldo throughout but all of a sudden Beckham was talking about the Portuguese NT and things got confusing.

His life has been a roller coaster, the initial part of the book, which speaks about his football fervor, as a young boy, attracts attention. You begin to sense that youre reading something very fresh, but soon after the reader gets annoyed by the style of narration and begins to feel that the biography is not as organised and as delicately penned down, as it should have been : He is a football superstar and not some average sport personality. The story of his life till Real Madrid transfer seemed disorganized to me, that feeling of strong eagerness to articulate the passion was clearly lacking and the book also lacked fluency. I would call it as an average read, but it wasn't worth the popularity. I think the book could have been written in a much much better way.
Since I've been in quite the biography mood, I thought I might learn a bit of background about MLS sensation, David Beckham. I really enjoyed the book, which chronicles his middle-class upbringing, with a soccer dad whose life dreams were fulfilled when his son was signed with Manchester United as a teen on their youth team. In this book he candidly talks about the pressures of being an elite athlete, playing not just for Man U, but also for the English World Cup team (and his biggest professional disappointment- being sent of in the 1998 World Cup in France, which earned him death threats at home), and his move to Real Madrid (the book was written just as he was moving to Spain).
Being married to another celebrity has made his personal life pretty scary- his sons and wife being targets of kidnapping plots. But what made this book enjoyable to me was how he wrote about his family in the most lovingly ways. When he talks about his own father, or the father figures he's had in soccer, as coaches and managers, he usually brings it back to how he wants to be a father to his 3 sons. He strikes me as a very down to earth celebrity when you strip away all the glitz and glamour.
One thing that impressed me was the level of detail with which he can recall every, single soccer match he's ever played in. I guess when that's your life, you have an easy time recalling details, and the games don't really blend into one another, but it was still impressive to me. And ladies, there are 3 sections of photos of Becks as well!

He spent his career there then moved on to play for real Madrid the best team in the Spanish league. He was a global, fashion, and sports icon that everyone wanted to be or strived to be through the beautiful game of soccer. Review: I really enjoyed this book, for someone who played soccer they’re a very good author and have a very good way with words. I thought that this book is for all audiences’ even people who don’t really like soccer because it’s not all about that. It’s about his life, his struggles, his celebration, his family and all the obstacles he overcame to be the soccer player he is today “And what kept me going was the idea that, eventually, I’d get the call I’d been waiting for ever since I kicked a ball.” This book deserves 5 stars and was an extremely good book to read I would recommend it to anyone even if you don’t like soccer.

Beckhams’ transformation from a poor boy to a soccer star worth millions to a model to a father. David Beckham “Both Feet On The Ground” lets you in on his exciting life.
As Beckham starts to catch the soccer world’s eye with Manchester every one wants him on their team who can afford him, better yet who does he want to play for what are his feeling and thoughts on a move to a new club. Does he want to be a model, how will him being a model affect his personal life will it cause any problems in his family with his girlfriend. He got a kid coming into the world what kind of life does he want for his kids. Growing up in a world full of cameras and paparazzi, he feels with so much pressure now how will he deal with it a lot, having to perform good to stay with a good team, having to stay in shape to look good for modeling, having to be a good father and husband.
Beckham talks about what he thought and how he felt in every moment and that’s good because it makes the reader feel like they’re in the position he was. The book makes you feel like the star that Beckham is. He sometimes tends to go back and forth to the pass and the present so you might get a little confused but maybe he does that to keep you reading.

i liked this book because david beckham inspired me to play soccer, he is from england and a all time star player his team mates would pass it to him and would score a goal he played for manchester united and LA GALAXY he played for other teams, when the world cup happend on 1998 he was playing vs agentina an opponent was approaching towards hims to flick his head and beckahm was mad he kicked him and the referee gave beckham a red card
Surprisingly racy read. Beckham apportions the right amount of football life in his overall journey of moving from a small town boy to one of the legends in his chosen field. He is honest in the narrative and also speaks openly of his rather stormy end to a long relationship with his manager Alex Ferguson. Comes across as a complete human being who balances his strong and loving personal life with demands as a professional footballer.
I reccomend this book that I enjoy most soccer books, as well as books that provide insight into what it is to be a professional athlete. I'm not sure that we in the US understand the scrutiny and pressure that a professional soccer player is under in Europe - aside from royalty, they don't have Hollywood stars or other professional sports stars to divert the media and public's attention. I found it quite interesting, though heavy on sports info (which I kind of skimmed because I know nothing of soccer). But even with the sports, Mr. Beckham made it fun to read. Glad I grabbed the book.
I remember when I was just a kid. I was deeply a Manchester United fan and at that time I remember that I just wanted to be like David Beckham. Today, I just wanted to refresh my memories about him and wanted to know his background. That is the main reason why I chose him as my Autobiography book to read for the independent reading. So far, I have learned so much about him through reading his Autobiography. From David's first soccer match with boys who are really older than him, to his first day

From David's first soccer match with boys who are really older than him, to his first day playing for Manchester United was very fascinating to read. The way he wrote this book was very descriptive and in-dept. Overall, the book was a bit exaggerated but I enjoyed it. I would recommend soccer fans who doesn't really know much about Beckham to read it, you would learn his history page by page.

The book David Beckham, My Side by David Beckham and Tom Watt is a great autobiography for all soccer fans and players. It was really interesting to see the road that one of the most well known soccer players and idols on the planet has taken. What was most intriguing was where he was at my age, compared to me. Just the idea of being in Barcelona, doing a professional camp with all sorts of future stars at 13 is insane. The book is quite long, and has it’s slow, sort of tiresome parts, but the t

Just the idea of being in Barcelona, doing a professional camp with all sorts of future stars at 13 is insane. The book is quite long, and has it’s slow, sort of tiresome parts, but the topic is what kept me going. The book is suitable for all ages in my opinion, though someone with little or no interest in soccer would find it boring and hard to understand. The word choice is pretty basic which, in some ways, widens the group of readers. I would recommend this book to all soccer fans.

I enjoy most soccer books, as well as books that provide insight into what it is to be a professional athlete. I'm not sure that we in the US understand the scrutiny and pressure that a professional soccer player is under in Europe - aside from royalty, they don't have Hollywood stars or other professional sports stars to divert the media and public's attention. Beckham comes across as a guy who loves what he does and has worked at it to become as good as he can be. He would be a great teammate, as the attention that he gets is secondary to his team's winning. The book was about half again as long as it needed to be. David spent too much time telling us what a sensitive guy wonderfull husband he is. When I finished, I actually had a lot more respect for both he and Victoria (Posh).

This book was an incredible read. I was taken on the adventure that is David Beckham's life. His personality and lifestyle is so much more personal and respectable than I had expected. I loved reading his perspective on all the games he was in and all the events. Things were constantly happening with him. His love for soccer has truly inspired me. My favorite part I suppose was seeing just how loved soccer is outside of the United States. People live for it, and I just can't find supporters in A

My favorite part I suppose was seeing just how loved soccer is outside of the United States. People live for it, and I just can't find supporters in America like I could find in England or other countries. Although the stories themselves were fascinating, I would have liked Beckham to work on his descriptiveness and embellishment to add a special flare. That would have made his story all the more inspiring. Overall it was a fascinating read.

Loved this book, it was full of real life experiences and his journey. Loved it, so realistic and really shows the life of a footballer and such a popular footballer - all of the problems that they face: paparazzi, team mate problems, girls and maybe even your own coach!!!
I really enjoyed reading David Beckham's autobiography, and it's not just because I'm a big football fan. What I like about his life is that no matter what happens, for him, family ALWAYS comes first. I remember the chapter when Real Madrid was very keen on acquiring him from Manchester United, he said that the condition was that his kids and wife will be with him. If not, the deal is off! And, he also said that beyond all the glitz and glamor, nothing can top him going home to his family after

I do not have a family yet, but I know that I will be the type of family man like David Beckham. It made me admire him more, not just as a football player, but as a person.

Great book, great insight on one of the best players to have played for England. It might have been very tough for him when he got that Red card against ArgentinaN at Saint-Etienne. The media made it worse for him. Also when he had to leave Manchester United. After reading both autobiographies of Sir Alex and David I think the transfer to Madrid was because of a misunderstanding.

David Beckham has not been very straightforward like Sir Alex has in his book. Maybe he did this to stay out of controversy like Wayne Rooney has done after the transfer scenario when Sir Alex said Rooney asked for a transfer but Rooney denied it and said he won't say anything further as a respect for Sir Alex who has just retired.

Gotta say I finished most of this book. The beginning following his early years at Man U was very interesting and captivating. Then the last 100 pages became a slog fest and I put it aside and never came back.
This book was very interesting because it is one of the worlds best footballers talking about how he had grown from a normal young child to a global superstar. I liked how he came out as such a modest and honest guy in the book as in real life he is one of he living legends of the game. I would recommend the book to others because He is very honest and provides many tips not just about his career but how to reach your dream and goal.
I am a massive David Beckham fan, have been since I was a kid, but not really for the football. It pains me to not give this book five stars and if I let my bias fangirl get in the way I would. A lovely book but with a lot of technical footie talk.

He has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, and in 2004 was the world's highest-paid footballer. He was Google's most searched of all sports topics in both 2003 and 2004. Such global recognition has made him an elite advertising brand and a top fashion icon. Beckham was captain of England from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006. He made 58 appearances as captain, and ended his tenure in that role after the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals. He continued to make contributions for the England national team in 2007 competitions. Beckham captained Manchester United for the first time on October 21st 2000 in a Premiership match against Leeds United, coming on as a substitute for injured team captain Roy Keane. Beckham went on to score a free-kick in this match, which finished 3-0.
Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 1992 aged 17. During his time there, United won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left Manchester United to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, where he remained for four seasons. While at Madrid, Beckham became the first British footballer to play 100 Champions League matches. In his final season, Real clinched the 2006-07 La Liga championship title (Beckham's only major trophy with the club) in the final game of the season on 17 June. In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham would leave Real Madrid and sign a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Beckham's new contract with the Galaxy, effective 1 July 2007, gave him the highest salary of any MLS player in history. He debuted for the team on 21 July in a friendly versus Chelsea at the Home Depot Center, and on 15 August, he had his first start with the team, scoring his first goal in the 2007 SuperLiga semi-final. His first league start then came on 18 August in front of a record crowd at Giants Stadium.
