Until The Autobiography of Billy the Kid. Oh, there have been many claims that it wasn't Billy whom Pat Garrett shot in Pete Maxwell's darkened bedroom on July 14, 1881. But in fact it was. Billy just didn't die then. With the help of loyal friends he played dead, was "buried" long enough for Garrett to leave, nursed back to health, made his way to Wichita, and under the name of Henry Carter became a leading rancher until cancer laid him low. And now: Billy tells his own story. What were his feelings and fears, his pleasures and regrets? What really happened, not the media and the movies' and Garrett's exaggerations. Just as Billy, as he lay dying in a care center, told it to a young Ralph Estes in 1951.

I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this book was. Of course, we know going in to this work that the author has a lot of gaps to fill, but he did a really great job of smoothing any rough edges and making this believable. This is not a long book, but it is so fun to read. The dialogue the author has used sounded so authentic and so much like the character you would imagine Billy to have been, that you just don't want to put this down. My elderly father has always been fascinated with this period of history, and was thrilled when I read this book to him.
I loved that the author didn't follow the same route so many others have and write from the perspective of a sensationalized hero. In this Billy is William. He is there to tell his side of things and let the reader decide of they believe him or not. With so much comprehensive research on this subject, this author was really the only one who could have done this so well.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves the wild west or "Billy the Kid." I loved it.

I have read a fair number of books about Billy, and Ralph Estes has done a wonderful job of telling the story from the "mouth" of Billy. His history is excellent, as is his summary of the Lincoln County War, the geography of New Mexico and the people involved. I live near Billy the Kid's Lincoln, and I have seen the jail in Mesilla and the Court house in Lincoln. The autobiography is very good historically, and it is well known in the area that Billy was liked by many. Pat Garrett, not so much.

If you are just starting out studying the history of the times and places of the Lincoln County War, this is a great place to start. I absolutely love his short bibliography at the end of the short book. Bravo and well done. The only clunker I found was "Billy" using the phrase "tough love". Even if told in the 1950's, the term does not come into play until the 1960's. A very small misstep in this enjoyable telling. Maybe Billy had already heard that as well?

I must say that I was reading this book as a lark – I went in have no expectations, had not read a review nor had I even heard of the book. After the first page I was hooked. The tone felt realistic – as if this were a true re-telling of history by the legend that lived it.

My "problem" is that I like to read more or less everything, but sometimes it is ok, like this time for example, because I got a whole new versione of Billy the Kid' story and I love western!
Il mio problema è che mi piace leggere più o meno tutto, ma a volte mi va bene, come stavolta che mi è capitata una nuova versione della storia di Billy the Kid e a me piacciono i western!
THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND BLACK ROSE WRITING FOR THE PREVIEW
Well researched. I enjoyed having the story in Billy's voice. It certainly gave me a different way of interpreting what happened to him. I don't know that I'm convinced that he survived, but I can certainly see the rest of the story being closer to the truth than has been described in the past.
