I thought to myself, I liked Growing Pains. I'll read this. And then, while reading it, I thought, why can't I remember much about Growing Pains? And then I realized: it was over twenty freaking years ago!! When did I get so old?!?!?!
As a child of the '80s, I couldn't help but love this book. I remember so many of the things he talks about. I enjoyed Kirk's account of his teenage self-image issues in the midst of his teen idol status. His account of his conversion to Christianity is extraordinary. He has given up millions of dollars in order to live out his faith.
I read this for my former teenage self who was madly in love with Kirk Cameron and had posters of him all over my walls. Unfortunately he lived a fairly boring life.
Nothing heavy, very Mike Seaver-ish, but very refreshing to read about an actor who actually came out of Hollywood unscathed, wholesome and a Christian. Maybe there's hope for my daughter in the theater world, too.
Stop judging me. The book was free and I need closure on my relationship with Kirk.
Met him this weekend and can't wait to learn about the "way of the Warrior". Book club?

Ok, so *maybe* I ignored my family for part of the weekend to read this. It wasn't a page turner, but the writing voice is very authentic and likeable (yes, even for an evangelical missionary). I didn't learn too much dirt about him - he married his first real girlfriend, so there were no torrid affairs with Alyssa Milano or anything delicious like that. It's an honest account of how being a teen star is awkward and not necessarily for everyone- and then it moves into a brief tale of his journey from atheist to devout Christian. His conversion to religion seems to have surprised him as much as his legions of teenage fans, and he actually doesn't spend much time on it. The writing voice was exactly what I expected it to be- true to Mike Seaver-ness while nothing near Shakespearean. He repeatedly quips and puns in attempts to entertain readers and then calls himself out on his cheesiness. Somehow it worked.
So as I read,I was pretty pleased by it and was impressed that he didn't shove his religion down my throat.
Until the last chapter.
That's the part where he offered his broad interpretation of the Ten Commandments. As in, he plays Cliffnotes to God. Apparently "Thou shalt not kill" isn't really "kill" but a bunch of other things. Courtesy of his runny interpretations of sin, I am hellbound. Who knew?
So suddenly this guy I liked became kinda unlikeable. I mean, what stress! Here I am, just wanting to read your teen bio and next thing I know, you're condemning me!
He also spent a paragraph per religion discussing how they don't offer the salvation you need. An infomercial of 3 page proportion.
But let's get back to the important stuff: I'm going to hell?
Maybe. If so, it's for reading this book!
Well, Kirk, if this is the thanks I get, you can bet I'll be reading Michael J Fox's bio next.
I really enjoyed this book that I found cheaply in a Philippine bookstore. I had seen the actor in several Christian movies but was unaware of his secular acting career prior to his conversion. I was encouraged by his bold testimony after his conversion as he left his secular acting career behind realising it was incompatible with his new-found faith. His strong Christian faith now is a testimony in the midst of a Hollywood that isn't the least bit interested in the things of God. It is hard to

I was encouraged by his bold testimony after his conversion as he left his secular acting career behind realising it was incompatible with his new-found faith. His strong Christian faith now is a testimony in the midst of a Hollywood that isn't the least bit interested in the things of God. It is hard to find Christian's in those circles who are truly trying to live in holiness. Most seem to be walking danger lines in a desperate attempt to hold on to their fame and fortune. Cameron isn't doing this and I'm sure has faced ridicule due to the stance he has taken in accordance with the Bible.
A example of Jesus' instruction to count the cost and to give up our worldly lives when we decide to follow him. Recommended for Christian's in positions of responsibility debating whether to "go public" with their faith. There is really only one option.
How refreshing to take a look at a celebrity standing morals and principles instead of promoting the foolishness they usually do! It's a nice peak at the life of someone who is walking with God even though it has cost him opportunities in his line of work. He wasn't afraid to make his faith walk number one... encouraging!
This was a charming read and challenging at times. It was difficult to read the chapter about Camp Firefly without tearing up. More than the first part of the book is just fun information about his life as a child star – toward the end of the book you start to really see how his faith has affected his life.
I loved this book. It was one of the best ones I watched in awhile.
His life was pretty interesting to read about. His faith on set was amazing, and how he met his wife was neat.
I recomend this for ANY Kirk Cameron fan....or chrisitan who wants a view of a actors struggles.
I LOVED this book! Kirk's wonderful sense of humor and his open, heartwarming reminesces about his younger years made this book hard to put down! I especially enjoyed the stories of how he met his wife and how he got started with the Left Behind movies. A must-read!
Very neat read! It was enjoyable yet very informative. It was neat to see what some of the day-to-day looks like for a movie actor. Highly recommended! Kirk Cameron has some experiences that were amazing to read about! God has His hand on this man!
I was never a huge Kirk Cameron fan growing up. I occasionally watched Growing Pains as a kid, but it's not one of the shows that come to mind when I think of my favorite shows as a kid. (Those would be more Saved by the Bell, Full House, Boy Meets World, Roseanne, etc.) However, I am a huge fan of his sister, Candace; and after reading and loving his mom's autobiography a few years ago, I've always been curious about him.

I knew Kirk was a born-again Christian, and had always heard the rumors about him causing trouble on the Growing Pains set, but didn't know too much more about him. Though this book was not that well-written, I ended up really enjoying it. I think it's a shame that Kirk got this reputation as being a pain in the butt to work with because he didn't want to be in scenes that compromised his beliefs. It is a little ridiculous that you can be a crack addict in Hollywood and show up to sets wasted and be such a liability that the insurance for you on a movie set is astronomical, but you will still get hired. And then you have someone who is a Christian, and Hollywood doesn't want to work with them. That's just odd to me.
I admire Kirk for standing up for his beliefs. I watched the movie
Fireproof
a few years ago, and was very impressed that he refused to kiss the actress playing his wife. He had his real-life wife come in, and they kissed in silhouette. I had heard about that while watching it, and thought it was very sweet and romantic.
Not only does he have my respect for standing up for himself, but he and his wife run a camp for seriously ill children and their families. This is a cause that definitely hits home for me, and I teared up during this chapter. I love that they make this camp for the whole family instead of just the sick child, and that the goal is the family coming back together as one.
All in all, this wasn't necessarily a great BOOK, and I considered giving it 3 stars instead of 4. But this book made me feel very peaceful upon completing it, and that deserves 4 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. It had humor in it and the way Cameron wrote it, made it a fairly easy read but interesting at the same time. I enjoyed reading some of the behind the scenes of "Growing Pains" from his perspective and hearing how he came to Christ. I also enjoyed reading about how he met his wife, Chelsea and how the book shared their story from both their perspectives. Kirk Cameron came out as very real and genuine in the book, sharing his insecurities when he was younger and sharing of how nervous he was when he was interested in Chelsea.
I really enjoyed this book and I know many others will as well.

I didn't have a television growing up, so I only saw a few episodes here and there of Growing Pains. I don't think of Kirk Cameron as Mike Seaver, but rather as the cutie whose face decorated my bedroom wall back in the day along with Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, George Michael, John Stamos. . .(blush) Confession: I was boy crazy.
Anyway! It was fun to walk down memory lane as he referenced his parachute pants, high-tops, pegged jeans, and acid-washed jeans, but I'm just dating myself there. I can't imagine what a narcissistic person he was as a result of all that fame as he shared "life was all about getting to the place where I could be happy all the time" (49). His reflections just validate my lack of interest in my children having any sort of similar career. His wife further explains "It wasn't that Kirk was intentionally selfish; he was just conditioned by a world that revolved around him. Home life is far more challenging than being a star on the road, and it requires much more giving rather than getting. It involves continually thinking of others before yourself. The addition of each child in our house has caused us both to become more and more selfless" (179).
I appreciated his openness with his faith and his realization of the emptiness of his life as a young adult. "What did I have left to look forward to? More money? More fame? More admiration? Was the rest of my life gonna be more of the same?" (127) It was scary to read of his initial attitude of atheism as "it was what I had always been taught in school as a kid. My science teacher didn't believe in God and anyone with half a brain was an atheist too" (128)
I was surprised at how much we have in common, as he and Chelsea have six children, two through birth and four through adoption, and have adopted transracially. It makes me even more interested to hear them speak. I think they also gained credibility to speak about marriage as they were transparent about their own marriage struggles (which are, of course, exacerbated by the very public nature of their lives). Their conclusion, however, is "God is shepherding us and getting us through. Every time we get to a new pasture, I think, I'm so glad we stuck that hard season out" (180). Yep, me too. Me too.
I also really appreciated him sharing the story of his parents' marital problems and the way they were willing to make changes to work through them. I think that's a wonderful example for all of us, as every marriage has its problems. Having a strong marriage is work, but it's worth it.

Some years later, I fell back in love with the Seavers, and finding out that Kirk was a Christian made me like him and his show all the more. I finally got my hands on his autobiography, and what did I think of it? It was great in many ways...but not so much in a few others. The stories he told were all funny and/or touching, and I was glad to see that he stood his ground and informed everyone that the urban legends about him were not really true. It made for an interesting portrait into the life of a well-known public figure, and it was done with a dash of humor to boot. That said, the writing style wasn't the greatest, and some of the topics relating to Mr. Cameron's life and times that many readers might want to read about get barely mentioned, if at all. So, my thoughts? Fans of Mike Seaver and/or the actor who played him will probably enjoy this, but only die-hard

I found it interesting that he is one of few actors who has only been married once to an actress and has six children and has been married 17 years as of when the book was written. It was so refreshing to read about his love for his wife and family. Another thing that I found very interesting was the fact that after he
married, he vowed he would not kiss any other woman, even if acting. This has been something I've wondered about myself, how actors and actresses who are married can take those parts where they kiss in the shows. Kirk shared that when he agreed to do a movie produced by the creators of "Facing the Giants" that these producers respected this and for the big kiss at the end, let Kirk's real wife step in and did a silhouette shot.
An Appendix is included as well sharing some about his religious beliefs and books he highly recommends to the reader. I liked Kirk Cameron before reading his autobiography and after reading it, I even have more respect for him. His

Also the perspective he had through his celebrity upbringing as well as his incidents of wanting a more "moral" show once he converted. I was deeply disappointed on all levels.
This book is very scant and safe. It reveals very little. I am not looking for a gossip or a tell-all book. But there is no substance or depth to this book. It floats along on little details that Cameron probably thinks the reader wants to know about the show and some little funny tidbits about his life in the 80's; that people will want to hear these fun little silly stories as a quick escape. He spends lots of time talking about his childhood, his family life as a kid, how he got into showbiz, his early commercial days, auditions etc. None of this is interesting. It's like a "what-I-did" list rather than any insight of items of interest. He then talks about working on the show, which is not all that great either.
Here is what is missing. There is no discussion about the struggle and conflict about what he faced as a new believer. His conversion story is vague and undetailed. He discusses for a chapter about the great cosmic questions that every atheist has to ask. But how id he get there to Christianity? What about the other religions and did he expose himself to them? I did. Was there some great moment or event that poushed him to Christianity? What specifically about Jesus did he fall for? God is one hudle, Jesus is quite anothe. It took me another 7 years before I committed to Jesus. And so what about that for him? Silence
ALso what did his mom think about his conversion? Sisters? Father? After the difficult marriage, did his father also convert to Christianity? And the lack of discussion on the moral clash he had witht he Growing Pains cast and producvers/ From what I read, he even asked the producers and fellow actors on how to dress and on storylines. In otherwords, he seemed to want the show to reflect his values under the guise of "I cannot paticipate in this" This is a fascinating issue. Understanding his age and recent found conversion. what it sounds like Cameron was doing was a form of totalitarianism. maybe he didn't mean it or realize it, but it was exactly that. any reflection on that rather than some general candy coated "I could have handled it with more grace?' There is no such soul searching. we chritians are supposed to be responsible and taake ownership of our actions. did Cameron do that? This is a central issue and he avoids it comepltete.y
Even as he discusses his marriage, he is vague. This leaves readers fristrated with so much more common sense questions. how devoted of a Christian was Chelsea? what kind of discussions about Jesus did they have? How did the show end? No discussion of this. what was life like afterwards? how did he financially support himself? what did he then want to do with his life? more acting? ministry? why decide to only act on Chrisitna movies or projects/ why not still do mainstream but still be a Chritian? He also seem to virtually worship Chelsea. he sees her as some pure as snow angel. he describes their dating and courting process as too ideal and sacred. you know this is exaggerated and maybe that's how he sees it. That's unhealthy. The adoption process also seems to be skimmed over. From what I know, that is a long, arduous, drawn out prcess and they made it sound to easy like picking up milk from the local market. what was life like after the show and how did he adjust? what did he an CHelsea do for 5 years after they got married? did other Hollywood projects come knocking? what does he think of Mel Gibson? does he think he was too judgemenatla during his fame days? what is his view of someone who's best days are behind him and he is only living off his former glory days? does he really love acting? how can he be used and that talent be used for Christ? Such Christian creative persis rare in Hollywood. what perspective or thoughts about that does he have? what life goal doe she have? what is his main passions? how does he support his 6 kids ? as a man, we are cons=cerned about such things. These kind sof holes also miss an opportunity for seekers to understand and see us believers as human and credible. But now without the explaination and transparency, Cameron looks as weird and biazzre as ever, making our faith more alien to the potential seekers.

If you're familiar with the old television series, Growing Pains, you'll remember Kirk Cameron, who played likable goofball, Mike Seaver, during the show's seven-year run.
In Still Growing, Kirk shares his story of growing up in a pretty regular family, with three younger sisters and parents who loved and guided them well. He tells how he was introduced to the entertainment business at the age of 9 after his friend Adam Rich (Nicholas Bradford on Eight is Enough) put the Cameron family in touch with legendary Hollywood agent, Iris Burton. After learning the ropes of the audition process, Kirk landed several television commercials before being selected for his famous role on Growing Pains, which also starred Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, Tracey Gold, and Jeremy Miller as main characters.
Solid family grounding coupled with Kirk's own personality kept him miraculously away from the traps that snare many young celebrities - drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, run-ins with the law. At age 18, as he began contemplating the larger questions of life, he started dating the sister of a "very pretty girl on the set," and was invited to attend their church. After listening to several sermons and doing a lot of independent reading, Kirk made the decision to follow Christ. It was a decision he took seriously and it gave him a new lens through which to view his television character and Mike Seaver's choices. Often enough it caused problems with the writers and directors of the show, who were accustomed to Kirk's previous willingness to go with the flow.
Much was made of Kirk's conversion to Christianity, and his conversion has informed and transformed his life. Kirk admits that he made some mistakes early on in his faith as he was figuring things out. His stance on moral issues and on roles he is willing to play have certainly cost him work. He quotes one famous scriptwriter as saying "for an actor in Hollywood, you sure picked the one unacceptable religion, didn't you?" (p. 200). That must be the understatement of the century, and one has to give Kirk a lot of credit for standing firm in an industry where pretty well everyone is willing to compromise and it is difficult to see the difference between actors who self-identify as "Christian" and those who do not.
I admired Kirk before I started reading this book, and I admire him even more now. Here is a worthwhile role model for those who wish to live out their Christian faith, whatever their chosen profession. Here is a book worth reading.

Because of that, I probably enjoyed this book more than the average person. Also, I just find it strangely fascinating to read autobiographies of stars. Their world is just SOOO foreign from my world, that it's exciting and intriguing to me. I was also interested in how he became a Christian, because in the case of most child stars, this is not the typical direction their lives take. The other thing about reading about child stars that I find interesting is just how 'normal' their feelings, insecurities, and mistakes are. I kind of have this idea that 'Oh, they're famous, they must be know what they're doing' or 'they must be above all the normal teen stuff', but really, they're regular people with a demanding job, trying to balance work and life, at a younger age than most people have to manage this balance, and they often have typical teen insecurities, troubles, and naivete. It's strange to think about how a person would react, when so many people idolize him, and they can have just about anything they want, materially. His personal life wasn't what I would've imagined for a teen idol, no crazy, wild party life or anything scandalous, but maybe because it was so mundane, I thought that was pretty cool for someone who could have done anything he wanted. I admire him for standing up for his beliefs after he became a Christian, especially the midst of Hollywood culture, which often mocks Christian values and I admire his commitment to his wife (so much that he's said he won't kiss another actress for a show even!), and his decision to wholeheartedly serve God through ministry, even if that meant limiting his acting career.
The book itself sounds like he's just talking to you, it's just very casual and easy to read. There were a couple of grammatical errors that irked me a little, but whatever. It's become so common to find grammatical errors in newspapers, blogs, etc. that I guess I shouldn't get worked up over it. But it does make me wonder-didn't anyone proof-read this?? (Not just this book, but every time I see grammar mistakes...and I know I'm not perfect in my grammar, especially when I'm just writing a review...but a published book or article???)

It's not a well written book, but I enjoyed learning what it's like growing up as a child star. I was impressed with his morals and courage to stand up to an industry at such a young age. He knows as an actor, a well-known actor, he has tremendous power and has chosen to use that for good. It's just refreshing to see someone come out Hollywood unscathed.
As a plug for "Fireproof" it's a movie aimed at saving marriages. Again, the acting isn't suburb but the message is great.

This was a highly informative and humorous account of Kirk's life. It offers an in-depth look at what it is like to be not only a celebrity, but a teen idol and heart throb. Kirk is an awesome role model who puts his faith in God and his family before his career and celebrity. A wonderful book, and a wonderful human being. I had an opportunity to interview Kirk on my radio show, "Divine Intervention" a while back, when he was promoting his movie "Fireproof." You can listen to the interview here:
Back in the day, I had a huge crush on Kirk Cameron when he was on "Growing Pains." He definitely has had an interesting career, and I'm quite interested in reading this book. :)

Normally, I don't mind reading the memoir or autobiography of a celebrity, especially one concerning a celebrity that I find intriguing. However, after the first five chapters of this book, I struggled. Truly, I don't think I would have struggled with the book if the tonation hadn't slowly become more and more preachy where religion is concerned. (If you're not religious, stay away from the Appendix and don't read that part.)
Please don't misunderstand my statements concerning this book; it is a decent read that is well put-together, and a must-read for any Kirk Cameron fan.

I loved the first part of this book and learning some neat things about the making of Growing Pains and how Kirk grew up on the set. I was one of Kirk Cameron's biggest fans for obvious reasons. I have even heard him speak at a Christian conference and was very impressed that a man from Hollywood could be so convicted. However, I found the last 1/3 of the book preachy and self-righteous. I am a Christian but probably wouldn't recommend this for a non-Christian because I think it comes off too go

I was disappointed especially in the appendix where he tried to summerize scripture and in his way try to witness in what I believe is a tactic that does the opposite. Anyway, if you love Kirk Cameron you will enjoy the book and I get what he was trying to do I just dont think it was effective.

Sitcom child actor grows up and tells about his life in the business. I did watch Growing Pains when I was growing up, and later the Left Behind movies. It is always interesting to me to hear the background, in between stuff, especially when it comes from the horse’s mouth. I know it sounds corny, but this book did make me laugh, and cry. There were many bits I read to my husband when I was reading through the book, that made us go hunh, or even laugh. And telling my mom the story of Camp Firefly I found my self so touched, I ended up crying. I will say it was very thick with the ‘religious stuff’ at the end. Although he was being very honest about his life and his views, I could see how this could be very off putting. All around an entertaining read I could pick up and put down as time allowed. =D

Kirk Cameron is a pretty famous actor, even though he hasn't done a ton of recent mainstream work. Recently he is known for his activism in regards to his faith and the few controversies around his actions he has taken in defense of his faith. I grew up on Growing Pains and remember hearing a few of the dramatic behind the scenes stories, so to hear his side of the story was interesting. The reader must realize that this is only one side of the whole story. As I see Kirk Cameron as this perfect Christian, it was interesting to read about his childhood and it humanized him a little.
Although I still think he is very extreme and polarizing, I enjoyed this one.

A simple biography of a young man's journey of faith. He shared some nice details about his courtship and marriage to Chelsea. He also shares about Camp Firefly and The Way of the Master evangelism training.

But much more noteworthy than his acting career was his conversion to Christianity. Kirk was not raised in a church-going home and describes himself as a devout atheist from a very young age. By the age of 14 he was so convinced there was no God that he laughed at those who thought there was. But that all changed one afternoon as he sat in his sports car pondering the first Gospel message he had ever heard. You can hear Kirk's testimony in his own words here:

Kirk continues to be actively involved in quality family entertainment and travels throughout the country, making the most of every opportunity to further the Gospel. He speaks in schools, churches and at community events. He is also a producer and host of The Way of the Master television series and radio program..
Kirk and his wife Chelsea have six children and live in southern California.

“In this town you can be a wife-beating, manic-depressive crack-head and everyone opens their arms to you. They say, "Hey, pal, don't worry about it. We'll get you into recovery. It's all part of the journey." But if you become a born-again Christian and love Jesus Christ and want to share that with other people, they say, "You've committed the unpardonable sin.”
