School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-The introduction to this title immediately challenges preconceptions one may have about autobiography, broadening its definition to include not only spiritual histories, confessions, and essays, but also poetry, plays, fiction, and new journalism. The book shows a balance of attention paid to the historical Western tradition represented by such writers as Saint Augustine, Michel de Montaigne, and Benjamin Franklin, and the importance of the change wrought upon our society by ethnic, feminist, and gay and lesbian offerings. The work of 20th-century authors such as Norman Mailer, Malcolm X, Alex Haley, Black Elk, Margaret Meade, Maya Angelou, Lillian Hellman, and Ana s Nin are considered. A historical overview of the genre and a discussion of its forms precede 20 well-chosen essays by prominent literary critics. Introductory notes to the entries are an additional aid to understanding. While requiring at least a nodding acquaintance with American literature, this book would make a good supplemental classroom text or a source for individual research with teacher guidance.-Cindy Darling Codell, Clark Middle School, Winchester, KY Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
