Excerpt from Life of Benjamin Franklin: On the Basis of His Autobiography
Dr. Franklin is known in history as the American philosopher and statesman. Brought up a printer, by industry, perseverance, and good conduct, he rose to the highest position in society; a first-rate rank among scientific men; and the office of ambassador from his country to foreign courts. In all his conduct in life, good sense was the prevailing characteristic. He never lost, when his higher destinies were fulfilled, the original simplicity and plainness of his manners, or the fine tone of benevolent feeling which marked his character as a boy.
