"There was no system in place that could annotate African drum rhythms. Each time an elder died, he literally took archives of African music to the grave where it was lost forever. In the early 50's a young high school student, approximately 14 years old, heard the teacher say any sound can be written with Pitman stenography. I picked up my pencil and successfully wrote a drum pattern that I heard Congo drummers play. This was a feat that had never been accomplished before. These notations represented the moment of my birth or rebirth. So my journey through percussion notation began."
