Overview

Shmuel Sarig lives at Kibbutz Nir David, which he helped found 75 years ago. A Lithuanian high school student turned farmer in Palestine, Shmuel's journey took him from radical kibbutz pioneer to globe-trotting expert in fish pathology. In between he survived two world wars, gun-running for the Hagannah, and a stint as an architect of the final defense of the Israeli settlement against a German invasion that never came. In his travels, Shmuel never lost the sense of wonder of the country boy in the big city. Nor did he lose the sense of bafflement when politics or bureaucracy kept people from just going out and doing their chores.
