Thielicke's memoir, originally published in German in 1984 (two years before the author's death), is an engaging reminder of why Thielicke's appeal consistently cut across theological and ideological lines. Even at his most conservative, Thielicke created moments of dialogue with a radical student movement of which he was steadfastly critical. Even at his most radical, he affirmed the concept of a fatherland and criticized those most publicly identified with denazification in postwar Germany. Not surprisingly, those same qualities account for his self-description as a "wayfarer" and are reflected in a life of critical engagement that was never confined to merely academic theology. Thielicke's account of his life is a theological document as well as a window on German history from before World War I to the Weimar Republic, to the rise of Nazism, to the reconstruction of Germany after the war, to the student revolt of the 1960s.
