I was born in the town of Earlstoun, Berwickshire, Scotland, on the 19th of May, 1823. My father was Thomas Carter, and my mother Agnes Ewing, - both excellent people.

My father and his ancestors for many generations had been natives of Earlstoun, and were noted for great strength of body and vigor of mind. My father was one of the strongest men I ever knew. He was short, thick-set, and had great power in his arms. Even in old age, if he had a firm standing-place, he could bear almost any weight on his back or shoulders. He was a great reader and a close thinker. He had made up his mind on all the great problems of the day, - political, economical, and religious, - and held to those opinions with great tenacity.
