If in the course of these pages you should resent a constantly recurring personal pronoun, overlook it - mentally erase it, but don't accuse the author of being unduly egotistical. The penalty of writing an autobiography is that you must do it yourself. Custom has made it a rule, that the first person singular shall figure conspicuously in a work purporting to be a faithful record of the writers life. Its a silly custom, because other people know so much more about you than you know about yourself.

Just one word more. Fortune has treated me very kindly. I am going to record many nice things that have been said, and written, about me. If I omit any unpleasant ones, don't run away with the idea that, in my career, I have escaped them. Attribute it rather to a bad memory - a conveniently bad memory.
